Movie Madness Monday’s ooops it’s Thursday :( “Gone with the Wind”
Hey Ladies,
Well it’s Thursday and I meant to post this Monday, BUT….well….to be totally honest…I….um….forgot…Sorry superkurre. Well better late then never….here is a wicked review from superkurre on one of the most classic stories of all times
GONE WITH THE WIND!
It’s been called the best movie ever made by many in the film industry, and for the record, if it’s not THE greatest movie ever made it’s in the top 5 in my opinion. Gone With the Wind is an epic love story that tells the story of Scarlett O’Hara, the daughter of a rich plantation owner during the US Civil War. She starts out as a typical spoilt brat, whining when she can’t have what she wants and demanding all the attention of those around her. She thinks she is in love with the older and more sophisticated Ashley, but is it really love or something most of us seem to want; that which we can’t have? When the War begins, Scarlett has to learn the hard way that not everything goes according to her wishes. Through hardship and poverty she fights her way into a stronger, more mature woman who is learning valuable lessons about life. When she finds trouble again, she deals with it the only way she knows how, by taking advantage of a man she knows she can get and exploit, but doesn’t really want. It’s only in the end when the loss of a dear friend makes her question her life, that she realizes she had love in her life all along, but she was just too stubborn and selfish to see it. The ending of the film makes me wonder why more romantic films don’t end like this. It would be less predictable.
The film will be 70 years old this year, but it still touches on issues we deal with today. Very often we take our blessings for granted and don’t appreciate them until we are in danger of losing them. We also tend to want things we cannot have, always looking forward to something new thinking it just might be better than what we already have. Where I’m from, this movie seems to be on TV every Christmas and every year it makes me make the same New Year’s resolutions; learning to be grateful every day for everything I have and for the people in my life, and reminding myself that my life is what I want to make it into. It takes hard work, but in the end I know it’ll pay off. The thinking-I’m-in-love-with-someone-but-know-I’m-really-not part is still causing me trouble, but I’ll get there in the end.
The movie is about fifty hours long (actually 3 hours and 50 minutes), but if you can find good popcorn and a comfy chair it’s still one of the best films ever. And just in case you’re not happy with the way the movie ends there is a sequel in the form of a book, Scarlett, which is actually a sequel to the Gone With the Wind book and not the movie (the book is slightly different, but the movie is very true to it). It’s worth a read.
