WTF: Freeganism

Now this is interesting.  There’s a movement called freeganism, which seeks to promote sustainability and limit consumption of resources by salvaging discarded things – food in particular.  In other words, many freegans go dumpster diving for food.

I know the idea of eating food from dumpsters may seem gross, but read this interview with Marko Manriquez, founder of The Freegan Kitchen.  Manriquez talks about why he’s a freegan and what his lifestyle is like.

Then come back here and let me know:  Win, Toss, or Fail for freeganism?

i was eating lunch and read this. got grossed out but the idea of it is super! we do waste a lot as human beings. i wish i could do it but i dont think i can stomach the idea. i applaud those who do it.

bc of my conflicting feelings…i have to say toss – as in “toss” my cookies just thinking about diving into a dumpster.

I would say fail. The idea is good by there is a better way. Instead of telling people to eat discarded foot, they could try to get people to plan their shopping better so they don’t have to discard the food from the beginning. They could talk to restaurants that they are more careful when cooking so they don’t throw away as much. There are so many other solutions. This to me is just going too far to make yourself feel better or to get attention.

Yes, definite toss. I think it’s a lovely concept, especially living on a college campus – I know I’m going to throw out some perfectly good stuff so I don’t have to lug it all back – but I couldn’t bring myself to go dumpster diving for food.

I’ve heard of this. It’s a definite a win. Now before you decide it’s gross, don’t take the whole “dumpster diving” thing so literally. Do you know how many markets and supercenters throw away food that hasn’t even been touched or opened yet? It’s truly amazing how much we, as humans, do waste and most of the time, the food that freegans salvage in garbage cans are still in their original packaging. These guys actually care about the world they live in and are just trying to use as little as possible, what with the growing population and all.

Erm. Toss. Win in theory, fail in reality. It’s a good idea, and true that we do waste a lot of food (NOT that I’m a treehugger in any way). But actually doing it? Not so much. Freegans are preferable to vegans in my book, though.

i know a couple of prominent restaurants that throws away too much food that are still good. its a win in my place.

As long as it’s somethinge else than food, win. I know restaurants throw a lot of food away, but I think that once it gets in the garbage, it is not healthy anymore.

win! the thought of dumpster diving is sicknast, but the idea of freeganism? seriously, so much good and usable items are thrown away. why would stores rather throw away perfectly good food then give it away?! I say, if is completely packaged, go for it yo
