Woman embarrasses Kathy over her lack of swimming ability

56-year-old Jennifer Figge became the first woman to swim the Atlantic.  Yeah…the ATLANTIC…as in, the Atlantic friggin’ Ocean.

Sharks?  No problem.  She swam in a cage.  30 foot (9 meter) waves?  Please.

It took her 24 days to achieve the dream she’s had since she was 11, when she flew across the Atlantic with her mother.  They flew during a storm, and that got Figge thinking that if she needed to, she could put on a life vest and swim the rest of the way if she needed to.

How hard is it to swim the Atlantic?  Put it this way.  It’s estimated that Figge burned about 8,000 calories a day during her quest.

The article.

Thanks to G, who’s planning to swim the Pacific.  Actually, I’m just making that up.  ;)

*** UPDATE:  This story is actually not all that it was cracked up to be.  Read the newer post for the full story.  ***

Apparently this woman only swam a fraction of the Atlantic, no the whole thing. Here’s a link to a new article:

Even if she didn’t swim the entire Atlantic, it’s pretty amazing that she swam some of it. I’m far to scared of the ocean, and marine life to even think of swimming two feet in it.

OMG, that is just unbelievable! What a testament to the idea that if you believe in something and put your mind to it, you can do it! Such an incredible, awe-inspiring story!
