News Flash: Kathy not AS embarrassed over her lack of swimming ability, but still pretty embarrassed
Apparently there was a big whoopsy in the story about Jennifer Figge being the first woman to swim the Atlantic, in that she, um, didn’t. Well, not really anyway. At least not in the way that the rest of the world was thinking she did.
News reports said that she swam over 2,000 miles, but that was wrong. She TRAVELED that much, but she didn’t swim that much. She actually swam about 250 miles. The rest of the distance was covered by boat. What happened was that she would go in the water and swim for part of the day, and then get back in the boat. Except the boat couldn’t just stop in the middle of the ocean…it had to keep moving along.
Ah well. On the upside, this means that this particular “first” is still up for grabs, for whichever woman is willing to undertake the challenge. You hear that G? Forget the Pacific! Go for the Atlantic you crazy Canadian!
Thanks to t and Alyssa! The dynamic duo who saved me from drowning in deep embarrassment.
