Boa Madrugada, GbD! Kathy has gotten lazy I tell ya. Just because I have posting privileges she got me to do her dirty work!! Can you believe it?? Anyway, without further ado: Brittany tells us a little about Burnaby (where I happen to live woot!).
******************************
So everyone has heard of Vancouver but no one has ever heard of Burnaby before. Burnaby is part of the the Lower Mainland which is the region surrounding Vancouver. It’s a smallish city with only 216,000 people.
Ok so now that the boring part is over lets get right into why I love Burnaby so much.
Growing up in Burnaby was amazing my Elementary School was right beside a huge creek and forest, so we spent a lot of gym class either swimming in the creek or playing capture the flag in the woods.
In my elementary school we had this really cool thing called the Great Salmon Send Off: it happens every year in may (and still goes on to this day); every class raises salmon and there’s this huge event with games and food, and all the classes release the salmon into the creek, to replenish the fish supply.
The weather in burnaby is…rain. It rains a lot, and it snows in March. Burnaby is a little messed up. There’s a running joke that you can tell if somebody’s a tourist if they’re not carrying an umbrella at all times hehe.
We have a local celebrity called Crazy Football guy. He wanders around in full football gear and thinks he is in the CFL. He is a super nice guy though. I tried to find a picture but couldn’t, sorry!
Housing prices are INSANE. You can’t buy a decent two bedroom apartment for less than 250,000. You can’t buy decent houses for less than 450,000… and that’s for a smallish 2, maybe 3 bedroom house.
Food… people cannot live without Tim Horton’s (and they’re open 24 hours yay!)… it’s like starbucks but cheaper and with donuts and sandwiches. People also love Poutine.. which is basically fries with gravy and cheese curds. Since over half the population is multicultural, we also have a lot of ethnic restaurants, such as chinese, indian, greek, korean, japanese etc.
A lot of movies and tv shows are shot in Burnaby. You’ve probably seen a lot of them… like Smallville, Supernatural, The Invisible (this one was shot at my high school!), Juno, The X Files, Battlestar Gallatica etc etc etc. By the way, my parents were asked if a movie could be shot in their house cos we have a kick a++ 50’s kitchen… but apparently the rest of the house was too modern, so yeaaah!
I would like to add that I’ve refrained from saying “aboot” “aboat” and “eh” during this entire post. And just so you know, NO ONE HERE SAYS ABOOT… HARDLY ANYONE SAYS ABOAT (my dad does though, and some older people do too)… but everybody does say EH! Cool, eh?!
I hope you liked what I had to say aboat my little old hometown. I’ll leave you with a couple of my favorite canadian ads (please overlook the fact that they’re Molson ads – I do NOT condone beer drinking, much less UNDERAGE drinking. DO NOT drink you hear me? thanks!), and a couple of videos of Canada’s favorite pop star: Robin Sparkles.
