Harassment Culture Shock

A recent study shows that 98% of foreign women and 83% of Egyptian women surveyed said they were harassed in Egypt.  (photo: Amr Nabil / Associated Press)

Going along with the theme of women traveling across the globe, here’s an article by a woman who describes what it was like to travel through Egypt with a female friend.

These women were grabbed, groped, and offered money for sexual favors.  And that’s just a slice of it.  Here’s a quote from the article:

Physically, we were prepared.  Mentally, not so much.  If you’re a female planning to travel alone or with other women to explore truly one of the most amazing civilizations in ancient history, I hope you pay heed.

I hate to say this, but I wish I had been traveling with a man.

So what do you think about that GBD?  Knowing what it’s like, would you still go?

Thanks to Lindsey!  That’s twice she’s hooked us up this week!

As much as I love to travel, I find this situation very sad. Once again, I think we take our rights for granted and then realise women are not always well treated all around the globe. I hope we could find a solution and act to establish a mutual and international respect.

I think I would still go, but avoid certain places and yeah, maybe be accompanied by a man…

My mom and grandma used to travel a lot in Turkey and Egypt, starting of several decades ago. They said that this seems to be something special to islamic countries. Acording to her, this problem much worsened the last one or two decades in Egypt, but was not really a problem before. Turkey on the other hand clearly improved over this time and is now one of the most open, advanced and healthy islamic countries.

Screw them! It’s Egypt. If they have a problem, then fine, but it wouldn’t stand in my way of seeing the pyramids and museum and everything. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but mace will definitely blind them :P I’m just kidding…Or am I? DUN DUN DUN!!!

I dare to dream of a day when stuff like this isn’t an issue, but I’m not holding my breath lol.

I used to know some arab guys. And from what they said to me, it’s quiet common for muslims to regard a woman as a whore just because she’s not covered and wearing some exciting jeans like in the picture above. And of course, they think that because of that dressing, they are allowed to harass, fondle and command them, which I find naively inhuman and unrespectful.

I don’t know what to say about this. I read the article and I’m surprised to hear how sexual harassment is accepted there. Why don’t the cops do anything? I think it is wrong that these disrespectful pigs think they can treat women this way. I would like to visit Egypt some day, but I guess I will need a guy friend to come along. I hope this changes with time. I couldn’t even imagine living there.

hmmmmm, I smell propaganda…America has the most number of rapes and Canada is in the top 5 for rapes per capita. I have done research and found out places in the east actaully have the lowest rape percentages, Saudi Arabia being the lowest in the world. Stories like these make me sick, honestly I see this just another attempt to make westerns feel superior. Why haven’t I ever seen an article about Canada violating and disrespecting women????
