News Day Tuesday: God’s greatest gift to women?

Is the washing machine!  At least, that’s what an article in the Vatican newspaper said.

The article – written by a woman and titled “The Washing Machine and the Liberation of Women – Put in the Detergent, Close the Lid and Relax” – was printed this past weekend to mark International Women’s Day, which was on Sunday.  Here’s a quote from the article:

The debate is heated.  Some say the pill, some say abortion rights and some the right to work outside the home.  Some, however, dare to go further: the washing machine.

So sound off GBD!  What do you think?  Agree or disagree?

The article.

Thanks to G!  Who’s also thankful for the dryer.

That’s pretty insulting. Reminds me of TV ad’s from the 50’s

@Jessica F

The British economy is even worse, trust me on this. The £-$ rate is pathetic now, it was really good only 9 months ago. No more ordering stuff from the states for a while for Danny then.

Well, I would absolutely not place the washing machine at first place, far from there, but still, it could be on the list :P I saw women in Haiti, washing their clothes, in the river, and then carrying the wet and heavy clothes all the way back on the rocky and abrubt road…

However, women’s rights will always be at the top of the list

Excuse my language, but are you effin’ kidding me?!
That really is insulting. Okay so back in the day when women did most if not all of the house work a washing machine did help, but to name it as something that had a big role in liberating women…that’s going too far.

I find it pretty randomly gross to appoint a washing machine the greatest “whatever”.

I strongly disagree.

Even from a pure technical standpoint, there are greater things than washing machines.

Spend a couple of days without a washing machine and you’ll know what an impact it has on your life. I just did…….I could of kissed the repairman when he fixed it!!

Seriously, there are many things that liberated women from the home, and although it seems trite, they were important in aiding women to go out and pursue other interests. It helped women redefine themselves within the family. I don’t find it insulting but a reality in history. As someone who remembers life before many modern elements of technology, trust me, many young people take it all for granted.

In my opinion, the right of women to vote in this country was a turning point to women’s empowerment.

I gotta agree with the comment just above mine in that I don’t find the article insulting.. It’s a fact that throughout history, women have been customarily assigned all the housework. Anything that they have been able to accomplish over and above that certainly was fuelled by the drive and determination of strong and independent women, but it was technology such as the washing machine that HELPED to make it POSSIBLE for these women to act on their dreams. I wouldn’t say that the washing machine was the GREATEST gift to womankind, but I would say that all technology that has helped to make housework more efficient and less time-consuming has been a gift to society in general because it has made women more able to contribute to society in more ways since they’re freed up from having to spend all day doing housework.

That being said, I also think it is unfortunate that women have have had to be burdened with all the housework in the first place.. Such technology may be helpful to women but that’s only because women were saddled with the burden in the first place. So the technology is not a gift to women as much as a tool to narrow the artificially created divide between men and women.

Just my two cents’ worth, not sure if I made any sense..
