Writingcise Wednesdays – W.A.W – We Are Women

At the most marvelous retreat some of us gals had the privilege to participate in, and where I was so honored to be a part of as a inspirational speaker and to teach a Creative Writing class (which due to timing didn’t become a class, but part of the speech), (which gave me the chance to go have fun and play with the horses with Marcus and the K’s. Oops the founding K’s, since I’m a K, too,)  I became aware of  one passion a lot of you share.   So in the midst of having fun, playing, and enjoying the nice open air, I realized a lot of you gals love writing.

Obviously writing is one of my biggest passions, too! Especially Creative Writing. So, on Wednesdays (not every Wednesday), but more like once in a while…monthly???, we’ll have an online mini writing retreat. Sounds good? Writingcise Wednesdays! Yay!

Oh, by the way, I don’t go by “Sparklesoup” on a daily basis, but by Kailin, that’s where the “K” I mentioned earlier comes from. Sparklesoup is the name of my book publishing/media and film production company that started in 2001.   For those of you on Facebook, I’m there, too!  So if you want, you can call me Kailin, Aunt Kailin, Sparklesoup, Her Awesomeness, The Artist Formerly Known as Most Awesome…or my fav – She’s So Awesome She Can Refer to Herself in 3rd Person. Long, but perhaps the most accurate description of Kailin’s awesomeness. Because Kailin thinks awesome is as awesome does. And Kailin thinks this post should be all about Kailin. 3rd person, that’s what Kailin referring to herself as Kailin instead of “I” means for all you wonderfully confused international women out there wondering WT?  We’ll talk about 3rd person later on when it comes to another Writingcise in the future about creating characters.

So about a week ago was International Women’s Day, March 8…and there wasn’t a single post on GBD about it! What? This is a young women’s site and no mention of International Women’s Day? What’s that about?  Kathy?  Binks?  (Oh yeah, Binks was at the Retreat.  No internet access, no ties to technology.  OK that may be an excuse.)  Maybe the awesome Kailin needs to remedy this.

So, this post and the first Writingcise Wednesdays exercise will be about International Women and of course, your favorite topic, YOU! So, for me, it’s me!

This exercise is about you, freeing your mind to write, and empowerment. This is a Kailin writing exercise, exclusively created for GBD.   So please participate because normally this stuff isn’t, like, free (I teach workshops like these at colleges and conferences)  except the K’s and I got along so well…and I well, wuv you girls!   So, enjoy and have fun with it!

Here’s the Assignment:

1) Take the word, “Women“. Write whatever words first come to your mind about the word, “Women.”

2) Take the word, “International.” Write whatever words first come to your mind about the word, “International.”

3) Take your name, for me, it’s “Kailin Gow“. For Kendra, it’s “Kendra Voth”. For Kristin, it’s “Kristin Kreuk”. And yes, you guess it! Write whatever words that first come to mind that describes YOU.

Now you have a cluster of words you can use for your poem.

Here’s my Example:

Ok – I was going to show you a picture, but I’m still trying to figure how this blog board works. Sorry, for now, it’ll just be text.

——————————————————
1) Women – Strong, Unique, Beauty, Kind, Gentle, Loving, Child-bearing, Mother, Glue, Family, Leader

2) International – Global, World, Everyone, Connected, Reaching Out, Harmony, Peace, Free

3) Kailin Gow – Woman, Daughter, Mother, Wife, Writer, Observer, Giver, World Citizen, Passionate, Open and Honest, Vulnerable and Strong, Loves people, Me.

—————————————————–

Kailin’s Writingcise Example:

Wild Wind Brings me Women Whispers
Mother, Daughter, Wife, and Leaders
Connected glue kind Harmony brings
Global peace loving that everyone sings
I sing a song, this writer sings
“Beauty tames the gentle Beast”
Through passionate open honesty
I am uniquely Free to be Me.

—————————————————-
Now, it’s your turn. Turn the word clusters above from what you’ve written for the 3 words/phrases into a statement about YOU. Is this YOU or is this the YOU you want to become? If so, what are ways to help you achieve this?  Write this statement (yes, it’s like a mission statement) about you (like I did above) and post it in this post’s comments.  Be proud of who you are and share it with everyone here at GBD!   If you aspire to be what you’ve written about yourself, the first step is to write it then say it out loud and post it.

And about International Women’s Day – It’s celebrated all over the world, since 1911. Here’s a link to the official page.

There are ways you can help celebrate this day, too (maybe next year?) Anyone can. I did back in college by creating a parade and female film festival on my college campus. First one ever in the county. Maybe you can start something up, next year!!

Thanks, Jess!

These are not just writing exercises, but exercises in personal empowerment! Write what you want to see yourself as make it your mission statement – like a business. Like a business, you stick to your mission statement so that you have a GOAL to aim for.

Kailin!! you’re my hero! I’ve already confessed to you how much I love reading and how inspiring people like you are right?! so you can prob. guess how much I loved this exercise! I already started brainstorming something but have to stop cuz i’ve been crazy busy and it would be just too great to have some time for myself to finish this today but i have to run.. but i’ll be back! and hopefully with my mission statement ready!!
loove you K! and keep spamming! don’t care, it’s all abt Kailin anyways! hahaha

Auntie Kailin

March 20, 2009

Am I spamming? I’m just trying to answer back to everyone who writes here on this blog because this is interactive, right?

@ Joaninha_s – Yes, I remember that confession. If loving to read is a bad thing, then I guess I’m pretty baaaad, too, I must confess.

Can’t wait to see what you’ve written for your YOU mission statement.

Oh, and you’ve moved up the Awesome ladder *hands out 1 Big Awesome Smiley Face Sticker* since you’ve recognized it’s all abt Kailin anyways. You learn fast, lil one :)

Auntie Kailin

March 20, 2009

@ everyone at there. If you haven’t ever written a comment on this blog before or submitted anything to GBD, why not take a BOLD step and try it.

No cliques here, no too cool for school here, you know what I mean, AND don’t fret over writing a Genius Awesomeness Here (G.A.H.) bc that’s a lot of pressure to put on yourself. This is just a writing Exercise, which means the more you practice, the better you get. If you happen to write a G.A.H., then even more reason for you to send it over! Ha Ha…I feel like I’m talking to myself (like I used to when I hosted a radio talk show and couldn’t take call-ins until the very end of the hour. Yes, I had to talk to myself for a whole hour sometimes.) So…I can go on and on….spamming up the blog and driving spam-catcher TK crazy.

Strong Passionate moves me
Loving Joyful and Sweet
Support systems gathered nationwide
Cultural surprise at every door
I give in, the helpful hand I am.
Hard-work pays in the end
Beauty through our eyes is flirtatious
Brave and caring is who I am.

Dreamer wake up from your quiet slumber
Come out and play the world is yours to explore
Travel, experience new cultures
Absorb as much knowledge from this wonderful world as you can
Along the way you’ll stumble upon the amazing discovery of all that you are
You are beautiful
You are strong
You are determined
You are all those things and so much more.
Dreamer wake up, the fun can’t start without you

Compassionate strength in a vast universe
Cautiously approaching the endless choice
Reserved in footing but playfully charming
Weary of butterfly wings surrounding her nature
Overcoming the fear of the unknown
To see clarity and opportunity beyond uncertainty

Hi Emma-Lu,

Beautifully written. I love the imagery of a butterfly as a girl getting wings, transforming her into a woman.

Brilliant use of a concrete imagery.

Ah thank you Kailin for your positive and wonderful feedback!

It took me a while to post this, as I got a bit distracted, but I kept it in the back of my mind and then finally got round to it.
I felt so much calmer after doing this writingcise, as if I had this deeper self-awareness. I would love to do more…I’ve never heard of the concept of ‘concrete imagery’ – must go look that up!

Have a super day! Love Emma-lu

@Em – I’m glad you posted this, and it helped you feel a deeper self-awareness that is empowering.

I hope any of you surfing through GBD or on GBD would try writing one especially when you are feeling not quite yourself. Not only will you have to think about who you are in order to write this, but you have to think about who you would like to be.

That’s a lot of introspection, but that’s exactly how you grow :)

Kathy

July 12, 2009

Awesome poems guys!

Thanks for reminding me about this Emma. I’ve been meaning to write one. :)

Kathy

July 18, 2009

I finally got around to writing one. :)

X marks the spot
not once
but twice.
Once for the sugar
twice for the spice.
Am I all sweetness
and everything nice?
Am I all virtue
with minimal vice?
A dutiful daughter
but not yet a wife
not yet a mother
the cradle of life.
A nurturing nature is natural,
right?
The family circle is factual,
right?
A wandering woman
who’s wondering whether
it’s better to set her or tether her questing.
Impressive success
is successfully pressing.
Suppressing her best
is distressfully stressing.
Pressures compressing
keeping her guessing:
Does she possess the finesse for expressing?
Her fledging fluorescence
without acquiescing
requests and investments
that need her addressing.
So if I’m a mess
what do you expect?
I’m under construction
but keep on progressing.

@ Kathy – I just read this. Amazing and so incredibly soul-searching. Like all the ladies who wrote their You Mission Statement, you’re more than 1-dimensional, more than what the surface appears. You ladies are a lot more. Thank you Kathy for writing such a beautiful piece. You are very talented.

Perhaps you can help get the other ladies of GBD to write one, too?
