Made by the producers of Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 911, this documentary looks at (North) America’s obsession with beauty and the effect pop culture has on the body image of women and teens. Here’s all the info a girl could need about the film
*******
Through the words of the celebrities and media makers themselves, the cutting edge documentary, America the Beautiful, reveals the dangers of eating disorders that are fueled by the effects of pop culture on teen body image and self esteem.
“A FILM THAT MIGHT RESCUE THE LIVES OF SOME GIRLS AGES 12 AND UP”
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
From the producers of Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 911, America the Beautiful follows director Darryl Roberts as he asks Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Aisha Tyler, AnthonyKedis, Tisha Campbell, Julianne Moore, Michael Beach, Mena Suvari, Martin Short, as well as Ted Casablanca from the E! Channel and Susan Schulz, the Editor-in-Chief of CosmoGirl!, along with various other celebrities and experts in cosmetics, fashion, media, and self-esteem – the major question at hand. “Does America have an unhealthy obsession with beauty?”
In this socially probing, critically acclaimed documentary, we see how increasingly unattainable images contribute greatly to the rise in low self-esteem, body dismorphia, and eating disorders for young women and girls who also happen to be the beauty industry’s largest consumers. Who actually benefits from this high-priced journey towards this ideal? Is corporate America’s bottom line so important that it justifies a nation’s psychosis? What are the true costs of our obsession with youth, beauty, and a slender physique?
