Mari’s ‘Mazing Mursdays: Save the boobies edition!
Boa madrugada, GbD!
Technically it’s friday already, BUT this was the only time Gertie and Tay could spare to do the Mursday with me! That’s what I get for having high schoolers as minions.
ANYWAY, today we’re here to urge you to read up about breast cancer and do regular self exams! They’re not hard, really! and could save your life! Thanks to self exams I found out I had lumps, went to get it checked and ta da, now all I need to do is make sure they’re always the same size and that I don’t have any new ones… and a tiny little biopsy just to be on the safe side. But see how easy that is?! Early detection is key! but let Gertie tell you more about it..
FEEL YOUR BOOBIES UP! It could save your life! Seriously. You may think that it’s all a bunch of hooey when doctors say you should check yourself for lumps, but it’s really not. I know, I know, you’re probably thinking that it won’t happen to you. That you won’t become another breast cancer statistic, but you never really know. Hell, you could get struck by lightning tomorrow for all you know. At least something like this you can have some sort of control over, right? Feel, find, visit the doctor and nip it in the bud. Feeling around for a few minutes every other day, or week is much better than dying, yes? YES! If I still haven’t convinced you…I’ll scare you into it with a wee little story.
So it all began in 1942. My nana’s mother had finally succumbed to a long, HARD battle with breast cancer and this was before they had all of that high-tech stuff. For years, she had to travel from St. Catherine’s all the way to Toronto, then walk several blocks just to get radiation on what was left of her chest (one breast). Tired and ravaged, she would have to make this trip several times a week and those machines that concentrate the radiation had yet to be invented so you can imagine the toll it left. I don’t know the specifics, so we shall move on to our next stop. Picture it, 1991, little me had just came into the world that previous October 31st and guess what. The Nana finds a lump (after continuously checking for them for years). Good news is, they got it in time! So nothing happened, then like fifteen years later, I come home from school one day to find her sitting at the kitchen table crying her eyes out. There was another lump. A large one and it was scary. But she went into surgery and came out of surgery, but there was a catch. They didn’t get it all. Enter surgery number two…STILL didn’t get it all. So at this point, it was hella scary. This woman helped raised me, she’s like a second mother to me and here we are and it’s still not gone. Then came the third surgery and an intensive round of radation and those cancer pills, it was gone. PHEW! But the thing is, if my nana’s first experience hadn’t scared her so much and she had resumed the breast checking and monthly mammorgrams, none of this would have happened. We wouldn’t have went through all of that. Perfect example of how checking can actually help. Last year, my mom, the avid self-examiner found quite a lump one day and well…she freaked out for days. It turned out to be nothing, but if it had been, it wouldn’t have been something for much longer.
To close, I would like to leave you all with a video Taylor made demostrating how to properly check your boobies. Oh no wait…That would be illegal. You know what isn’t illegal? Checking your boobies. HA!
And if that was not enough, I have a few quotes from some very awesome people to steer you the right way:
