Fun Fact Fridays: Hippos
Aaaaand last week’s true fact was…#2!
- Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 for about 5 cents per acre. <– FALSE. The price was under 2 cents per acre. (source)
- There are more than 70 potentially active volcanoes in Alaska. <– TRUE. Holy macaroni, is this ever true. (I’ll explain later.) (source)
- Starting in May, the sun doesn’t set for 2 months in Barrow, Alaska. <– FALSE. The sun doesn’t set for more than 80 days – almost 3 months. (source)
- Kathy’s primary concern while in Alaska is that Governor Palin will mistake her for a moose. FALSE. <– Her primary concern was not getting to see the Northern Lights. Being mistaken for a moose was a close 2nd though.
And here are this week’s facts:
- Hippos can stay under water for at least 6 minutes.
- The oldest hippo lived until the age of 68.
- Hippos secrete a red fluid for protection from the sun.
- Kathy had to wear braces for 17 years to fix what formerly looked like hippo teeth.
Thanks to Chris! Like, super duper big thanks. HUGE thanks! I have just been totally swamped with work this week and Chris took a load off by sending me these facts right when I needed them. :) And you know, I’m not going to complain if anybody else sends me facts, or participates in any of the other projects we’ve got going on. Hint, hint.
Speaking of being swamped with work…I know that some of you have emailed stuff to me, and that I said I’d try to post your wonderful wonderfulness this week. Being as how today is Friday, and Mari is going to post her other Mursday today, it’s starting to look very much like I’m going to end up punking out. But Lauren’s Passport will go up tomorrow (note to self: set up Lauren’s Passport for tomorrow). And there’s also goody goodness from Andrea, Jenipher, Jette, Danny, and Dez (the adventure travel woman!). So if not this week, then next week. This time I promise. (I didn’t promise last time, hehe.)
Have a great weekend everyone!

April 3, 2009You’d think I would remember, since Chris and I were discussing hippos the other day, but noooooooo.
