Lonely Bear
So a lot of you younguns like the internetty hoohah stuff, like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. Perhaps you’ve heard of Whrrl? It’s okay if you haven’t. You’re still cool because you’re young.
Whrrl is interesting. When I first heard about it, it was set up to be like a “What’s going on in your neighborhood?” thing. It was a way for members to share their recommendations and non-recommendations for places and events in their neighborhoods. Kind of like Yelp, but with maps and stuff. Then if you were looking for a restaurant or something to do, you could sign in to Whrrl, see a home screen like this:
check out what’s good and what’s not in your neighborhood, read what your friends or random strangers recommended, etc. to help you decide what to do.
But it seems that Whrrl has changed course, and is no longer doing the neighborhoody thing. Instead, Whrrl 2.0 is about sharing stories. In this sense, it’s kind of like Twitter. Sort of.
Anyway, the point of this already-too-long post is to share a story I liked on Whrrl. Also, to let the geeks out there know that if you’re interested in making a neighborhoody site, it seems that Whrrl has abandoned that route, so the floor is yours.
The story is called Lonely Bear, by Melissa Pierce. Check it out. You have to read the captions for each photo to understand what’s going on. Also, it’s an ongoing story. My guess is that Melissa will keep adding to the story when inspiration strikes. (Ignore the “To Be Continued” slide. Just keep clicking the right arrow until you reach the end.)
What would be REALLY COOL is if you guys went out and made your own stories to share with us. I’ll try to make one too. You’ll see from Melissa’s story that all it takes is a camera phone and some imagination. You in?
