Fun Fact Fridays: More Brain
Hey there GBD! Sorry for not posting this last week. I…um…fell asleep. This is what happens when you’re old.
Anyway, last last week’s true fact was…#2!
- The heaviest human brain recorded thus far was 3 lb 10 oz (1.644 kg). <– FALSE. The heaviest human brain ever recorded was 5 lbs 1.1 oz (2.299 kg). (source)
- By 4 weeks, major regions of the human brain can be recognized in primitive form, including the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. <– TRUE. In fact, the human brain and nervous system start to develop at about 3 weeks. (source)
- It takes about 20 seconds after the loss of blood supply to the brain for the average person to lose consciousness. <– FALSE. It takes about 8-10 seconds. (source)
- Kathy lost consciousness once when she found out she won the New York State Lottery. Then someone stole her ticket while she was passed out, and claimed the millions that were rightfully hers. But Kathy isn’t bitter. Nope. Not at all. Not a bit. <– FALSE. Kathy never actually won the lottery. The only thing Kathy ever won was a $10 MetroCard (to use on the subway and buses) when she was a college student. And that was the single greatest moment of her life.
And here are this week’s facts:
- The average human being uses about 10% of his or her brain.
- The human brain operates on the same amount of power as a 15-Watt light bulb.
- A human head will remain conscious for about 15-20 seconds after decapitation.
- A few years ago, G accidentally decapitated Chef Boyardee while she was practicing her samurai sword skills. Chris ran over to the Chef to hear his dying words. Do you know what he said? He said, “It’s PAAAAAAH-STUH!!!!”
Thanks to G and Chris for this week’s facts! You see how they care for me GBD? They do everything they can to give me more time to sleep. Bless their young hearts.

May 1, 2009I would go with # 1, at least, that’s the % I always hear about. And for # 3….after watching a lot of decapitation on the Tudors…I hope consciousness stops right away…:S
