Mind-Controlled Wheelchairs

Yup.  They’ve made a prototype and 5 people tested it.  Apparently it works pretty well!  It’s not gonna win any NASCAR races anytime soon, but dude…you can move a wheelchair by just THINKING about it!  Is this not blowing your mind?  Because it’s blowing my mind.

I’ve been keeping tabs on this technology for a while now.  People have been working on this for a very long time, in the hopes of developing something that will help people with paralysis or otherwise disabled limbs.  It’s nice to see all that work finally paying off.

The video is fairly technical, but you do get to see the wheelchair in action, starting at the 0:50 mark.

This, citizens of the GBD, is why science rocks.  :D

The article.

Nice work indeed and it blew my mind too :P

If I controlled one of these with my mind, it would probably turn into an electric wheelchair version of Christine.

This is the technology I get to work on for my research at college–brain-computer interface!! I’m happy that other people are excited about this too!

Emma! You get to research this stuff?? That’s awesome! Is your major bio-related, computer-related, or both?

The brain is awesome!

That would be so convenient for Steven Hawking

My major is biomedical engineering with neural engineering concentration. This wheelchair uses a signal called P300, which is a nice signal to use because it’s easy and inherent in untrained subjects. My project uses a signal called sensorimotor rhythms, which are generated in your brain when you move your limbs or imagine moving your limbs. Right now I’m training subjects to move a computer cursor just by using their brain! Sorry if that was too much info…
