Tagine and Camels

Hello Ladies!

I just got back from Morocco where I was shooting a 2-part mini-series of Ben Hur.  Honestly one of my favorite production experiences in my career…  Content was rad, Director was really skilled, location was great (if a bit toasty and dry), and the cast and crew were so truly amazing.  There ia a lot I could talk about, but I am not sure you want to know every detail, so I am going to make a list and then tell you a few things in detail…

Cool and not-so-cool things about Ben Hur/Morocco:

  • I don’t think camels are happy.  But I do find them funny and scary in equal parts.  The Chewbacca noises are funny in the middle of a take…  (Not so funny when you are trying to make a day and your actresses can’t stop laughing.)  But scary when you are riding them or near their faces.  Camels are also probably the ugliest creatures I have been so close to.

  • If you do not eat meat, Moroccon food is not very appealing.  If you eat meat, it looks really tasty.

  • Production design on this is frikking AMAZING!

  • Emily VanCamp is probably the most intelligent and interesting young actress I have met… She is 23 and has what I think is rare in us young folk… actually it is just rare period…  She is actively interested in responsibility and accountability!  I love that.

  • I do not understand British pop culture or references.

  • Stars viewed from the Sahara with friends are really spectacular.

  • My judgement is flawed.  There are people of great beauty covered in mannerisms or skins that I have boxed up and never taken the time to know.  To think of all the new people I can experience!  I imagine all these parts of myself that I have shied away from.

  • I like acting.  I like challenges.  So fun!  I also love that I got to work with such well trained and skilled actors.  Alex Kingston played my mother, and she rocks my socks.  Really an incredible woman.

  • Extensions suck.  Like they are really NOT fun.

  • It is really hot in the desert.  And there is a lot of dust that likes to pool in your lungs and leave you hacking for a week or two.

Emily and KristinFor GBD I really love Emily VanCamp.  I want to get Emily to do the Sexy 7 as well as some other stuff…  What are your thoughts?  She is really a great example of strength and femininity.  There is a grace about her and a commitment to humanitarian endeavors and acting that is really inspirational.  I hope you all get to know her better.

Well… Love you all.  If you want to know more, just ask!!  A more open me,

Kristin

I loved Emily in “Everwood” and I’m looking forward to see her in a movie with you :)

I also think that Morocco is simply amazing :) My step-father is from Tunis in Tunesia and I like the arabian culture a lot :)

Your pic is very cute & funny.

Wow,that sounds so cool,i’m happy for you.I would like to go in Morocco someday, because it’s pretty close to my country and when i was little i used to love the culture of Morocco.
I have some questions ..
Why camels aren’t happy?!
What did exactly make you more open person..?

P.S. it will great Emily to do The Sexy 7 ..

June 20, 2009

I think it would be really cool if Emily VanCamp did some stuff for GBD! I didn’t even know she was only 23, she seems so much more mature lol.

Morocco looks so beautiful and full of history and culture. Did you get a chance to visit any of the heritage sites? :D

Oh and I have to ask, did the camels spit a lot? I’ve heard that they spit a lot haha.

It’s amazing something so picturesque can make you feel so miserable. I can’t imagine living there!

Hi Kristin!

It sounds like you had a great experience. Alex Kingston is a wonderful actress, I am watching her in a fun British series called Hope Springs right now. I had a question for you. I was the lucky winner of the DOXA camera auction and I was wondering where the pictures were shot. Now hearing about Morocco I think I have my answer, but I wonder if you could confirm it? In any case, the photos are wonderful, you are an excellent photographer.

June 20, 2009

I love Emily VanCamp. I used to see her on the TV show Everwood. She was great on that. She also sounds like a good example of what GBD stands for… so I would love for her to do some stuff for GBD. I think it would be awesome!! I also love Alex Kingston. She was amazing on ER. :D
Kristin sounds like you had a fantastic experience in Morocco. And by the way, I looove camels, I think they’re really interesting. Like the way their stomach is so strong that they can eat almost anything and how they store fat on their humps and eventually turn it into water so they can survive many days without eating or drinking water. And I also love their really long eyelashes that actually protect their eyes from the sun and from the sand. Ok I’ll stop now. I just really like them, although I’ll admit that I have heard that it is really hard to ride them. So I hope everything turned out all right for you! Actually, I would like to hear more about how you were able to ride a camel and whether or not you had a hard time and I would also like to know more about the food!! Was it good? What kinds of food did you try?
Hope you are well!!

June 20, 2009

when you say extensions is that as in hair extensions? if it is, OUCH. it sounds painful. did your skin get super dry in the desert b/c of the dry environment? did those camels stink?? how did you survive in the arid desert? YIKES!!!

@G – LOL. I LOVE your pic. i just noticed it mUhahah

Cool Morocco! my sister visited there last year, she also mentioned how beautiful the stars were at night. I hope Emily VanCamp does the Sexy 7, I’m sure it’ll be interesting.

There you were :P My friends actually came back last Monday from Morocco too hehe! They mostly did trek though, no shooting :P

It would be great if you could get Emily to do the Sexy 7!

It’s quite funny how you are inspired by Emily, because I actually think that you have a lot in common :P Isn’t she from Montréal? haha represent woohoo! :P

Did you have to speak French hehe :P

And I would like to have more details on your “open you”, how and why do you think it happened? What food did you try, loved, hated, refused to eat haha, and pictures!, you always have great ones, you’re very talented;) What is it with British pop culture? :P
Yeah, were they HAIR extensions?..in the desert…well, not that great indeed :S

aaaaand: When will we be able to see it, Ben Hur?? :D

thanks for the post!

It’s nice to hear from you Kristin!

So based on your post, are you a meat eater or not?

June 21, 2009

The picture looks nice. Good to hear from you again!

Having lived in England for too many years now, I was just wondering about your comment on not understanding British pop culture or references. Even though I have a lot of British friends and think I have become somewhat familiar with the culture, I sometimes find myself staring blankly into space when they talk about something. Doesn’t really help that English is not my first language. But hey, I try :)

June 21, 2009

Hi Kristin!
Thanks for taking the time to blog! I wouldnt have guessed that camels made Chewbacca noises.. good to know! I just have to ask which location did you enjoy more Thailand or Morocco???
Im looking forward to watching Ben- Hur!

Kristin

June 21, 2009

Okay, hrmmm. Where to start. I believe the mini comes out Easter of 2010 on ABC, BBC, CBC and many other international stations.

I don’t eat meat.

I didn’t bring sand home on purpose. But I did bring sand home. I think that it would be impossible not to.

The camels didn’t seem to spit that much. But they did sneeze… on my leg. Which is really gross. And they seem unhappy b/c the display behaviors that indicate crankiness to me. Although they are camel, not human, so maybe they are really really happy.

I am more open now for many reasons, but especially because I realized how limited my idea of people was. There is so much experience that I cut off b/c I decided the world was one way. And then I justified my belief, instead of actively seeking out more experience… Does that make sense? So when I saw how flawed that was, i could either make up reasons why this was an exception to my rule, or I could open up my mind.

Tagine is a dish or sorts. If you google it you will find more info. But it’s a traditional dish that they make with veggies and meat. I ate a lot of veggie tagine. And veggie couscous. And orange juice–sooo yummy. And coffee and pastries. Which are shockingly good… the French did bring some of their treats…

My French is rusty. But I tried.

Yeah, I think I am a little bit too slow for English wit. I get some of it, but when they use their cultural references I am lost. I think b/c I am not British…lol…North American references are different. I too glaze over, especially when I am overheated.

Hair extensions. Just the tape ones though, I do not want the horrible ones that destroy your hair.

I have pics, but I didn’t take as many this trip b/c every cast member had amazing cameras and it was kind of a joy to go camera-less. My camera is heavy. So Hugh Bonneville took some great photos I may post more of, and I have some from the Sahara camel journey. And to the DOXA winner– I took those photos at a beautiful old Kasbah outside of town, where they shot Gladiator, Babel, and other stuff. It is still a running Kasbah, and is one of the oldest… I would love to see the pics if you can post them somehow…

Okay. Did I get them all?
MUAH!

I like to hear stuff like that. Alot of times looks plays too much apart of peoples lives and not what is inside . I felt as outside the popular crowd as you can get and shy is not the word. I started seeing people as human and just flesh and blood realizing that one day death will come to everyone. I know there are more gifted people that to some are ugly but they have much more to offer than appearence. Love is not looks but i think being able to suffer a persons faults failures and enjoy the time 2 people can spend together. I am not a girl i am 37 yr old man and I have see so much with my dad dieing and mom and my sister having a nervous breakdown and having to care for them. One day of real love is worth more gold than a lifetime of wasted oppertunities.

Hey Kristin!
From your 2nd post (excluding the first post about your cool and no so cool things about your trip) you just missed one question!
“I just have to ask which location did you enjoy more Thailand or Morocco???”
Since you’ve had your short hair for a while, was it kinda weird to “long hair” again? Thanks for taking time to blog and answer questions!

Nina

June 21, 2009

omg I just realized that Emily VanCamp that you are talking about Kristin is on Brothers and Sisters show (which I totally love btw) :) )
You’re experience sounds fantastic Kristin, when are we gonna be able to see that mini series you were filming? Do you think we will be able to see it here in UK?
I had to laugh at your comment “I do not understand British pop culture or references” haha neither do I sometimes and I’ve lived here almost 5 years now :)

Best wishes, Nina xx

OMG I can’t believe it!!you’ve been here, in my country, that’s amazing!! You’ve been to Ouarzazate I guess, that’s where they mostly shoot movies; if I knew I’d have come to see you, but I hope you enjoyed your staying there ^^
Yes Camels might look cranky a bit, but it’s their nature, they’re tough animals just like their environment.
I’m glad you could come and discover another culture, and break the judgements that mostly people have of things they just hear about..I hope that it made you wanna come back cause you really have fans in Morocco! I love what you do since Edgemont and I wish you luck for your current and next projets =)

With Love xxo

June 21, 2009

well, that’s really nice to hear about it. i hope we had more details. it’s always interesting to hear about others experiences!
i hope we could hear more about it…

as a matter of fact i’ve been to marocco a few years ago, and it would be good to go back because i went with my parents and i couldn’t enjoy it as i would today because i’m older and so curious of everything, especially other cultures.
Hopefully, someday i’ll be able to see more.

what did you enjoy the most doing there? what for you was the most beautiful and amazing thing to do? What did you think about people there?
well the camels, that must be amazing seeing them and freaky too when you’re riding them.

hope you’ll update more details soon

Kristin!

Wow, Morocco, huh? *grins*

And you can speak french! (I, too, have rather rusty french) That’s interesting, what you said about the camels. I’ve never been near one; the most I know about them came from television :P

But I’m glad you had fun; also glad about the “a more open me” bit. It’s always good to grow and expand ourselves :)

Thanks for taking the time to post =)

Welcome back, Kristin!
Wow,.. what a experience! I think it’s amazing to know more about the other culture. You start to thinking about “There’s more people in this world”. You just open your mind for other things.
My father is military and we travel a lot in Brazil, to different cities, so even if we are in the same country, Brazil is very different, we have so many culture here. The point is even I cant travel like you do, I can open my mind here.
And what you do is just amazing, I mean, sharing this experience with us, make us believe we can do the same thing one day.

Thanks,

Rysa

Hi Kristin!

I’m very happy for you and that you are making inroads in your career. I don’t think I would like Morocco for the food as I am a vegetarian, but who knows, I may visit there one day.
I hope you will get to make blockbusters one day and that you will become very successful in your career. I admire the work you are doing with GBD and it’s good to work for the uplifting of women. Specially in the Middle East and several parts of Asia, women need to have their voice and self-esteem. We are no longer in the Middle Ages.
I would be happy to read more of your experiences in Morocco or in other continents where you work.
Are you planning to come to Bangkok someday for movie assignments?
I’d love to meet you. I am a big fan of yours. You can contact me at Facebook: facebook.com/roberto.echanes.

Kristin, I would be very happy to share the pictures, some of them are quite striking…except for the shot of what appears to be your drivers elbow. It was the last one, you probably thought the roll was done. :)

I did get digital copies when I developed the film, but I don’t know how to go about posting them. Would you like me to send the set to GBD so you could post them here, or do you want me to look for someone else to host them?

Kristin

June 21, 2009

@Mi– I don’t know how to put up photos… lol. Ummm, do you know how to do it? We could put the photos on GBD’s Flickr?

Will answer more tomorrow!

Kathy

June 21, 2009

Kristin is just kidding. She knows how to put up photos, she just doesn’t know it yet. ;)

Mi, if you could email the photos to any of us (my email is kathy@girlsbydesign.com), then we’ll create a slideshow to put up on the blog later. Just one question…how big (file size) is each photo, on average? And how many of them are there? Because if there are too many, than in an ideal world, you could compress them before sending them, but if not, just attach as many as you can to an email and send multiple emails.

If this didn’t make any sense or if you run into any problems, just let me know. Problems with sending the photos I mean. Problems with life I can’t help you with. ;)

Thanks Mi!

June 22, 2009

Epic fail on the pic issue Kristin (Kathy dun cover for her :P )

Total Win on the new shoot though :) Seems like a blast….sadly…there is no pics to prove this theory *cough cough*

It’d be pretty kick-butt if Emily Vancamp would do a Sexy 7 :D

Mi

June 22, 2009

Kathy, there are 26 shots, and they are very large, around 600kb each. I can reduce them to about 100k and still have a big picture with good resolution, I will email you the set when I finish. Total size is about 3.2 MB, so hopefully your email can receive them all. Please let me know if there is a problem getting them and I can try again. P.S. I rotated some of the pictures since they are for a slide show.

Welcome back K! I can´t imagine how amazing that jouney/experience could be.
I´m really happy!! :D It´s beautiful to listening to you saying “I like acting”. I´m not trying to butter you up, but I think you´re so talented and, as far as I´m concerned, I want to keep watching you in this world because I´m totally sure you´ll become a diamond ;) Keep going!

You actors have an interesting job. I mean, you never work alone, it´s always a team. You´re constantly learning, in contact with people, very different people between them and in very different fields. So, It´s good to know when you see someone (in this case, you kristin) that observes that circumstance and tries to learn, to make the most of it, to meet people (by listening), to enjoy all that stuff and she/he just loves to do that. It´s awesome and admirable.

Seriously Kristin: you ROCK!! ^^

P.S. Did you meet Miguel Ángel Muñoz, Lucía Jiménez and/or Simón Andreu (really talented this guy ;) )??

hi kristin,
i’m always so intrigued by the new projects you commit to. and i think it’s so amazing and fortunate that those projects bring you to such locations as Bangkok and Morocco. i know ‘Partition’ was filmed mostly in Canada, but I forget if parts of it were filmed on location. that is actually one of my favorite films, not only of yours, but in general as well.

i also love emily’s work too, and if she wishes to, i think she should definitely become involved with gbd. my cousin was just in Morocco actually for part of her honeymoon, before heading to greece, which is where we originate from.

what did you think of the people and the culture? i saw all of her pictures and the country looks beautiful. that picture of you and emily is great too, that blue color with the contrasting yellow desert is striking. i’m glad you enjoyed yourself, and i can’t wait for ben-hur to air.

I didn’t know you don’t eat meat. Is this something you just switched too doing or have you never eaten meat before?

Lin

Kristin,
French is definitely a challenging language.

Actually, it’s funny, because just last week i bought a book called, “Hide This French Phrase Book”. My mom knows a bit (yet scarcely enough to immediately travel to France with). But we have a great time during commercial brakes on TV, or in spare time, yelling out random phrases from the book. We probably aren’t pronouncing half of it right, but it’s still loads of fun!!

Camels…*sighs*…the first and last camel i saw, spit on me.
That moment of my life is definitely on my “Top 10 Grossest Moments”. I would N-E-V-E-R want one as a pet. It’s not that they’re bad animals…it’s just that they’re so messy. So, i agree with you. I don’t think they are happy. Maybe they are!! Who knows?? :)

Stargazing the Sahara…that sounds so lovely. I live in the city…can’t do that here!!

Extensions do suck. I’ve had them once or twice before. NOT fun. They may look nice in the end, but only for a little while. After that, they go kuh-put.

I understand some British humor. Very little, considering i am North American. Mom’s been to Britain, so she usually ends up explaining why something was so hysterical.

Lastly, (i feel like i’ve just written a term paper, lol) I love how you recognized that you can be more open-minded than you thought!! That’s wonderful!! Go Kristin!!
Seeing different people in a ‘different light’, as it were, is ALWAYS fun. I had the same exact thing happen to me when i went on a mission trip to Russia last summer.

Cheers!!

Lin from Ohio (USA)

Is so good that you like knowing other cultures, Kristin. There are so many and differents places, people, foods, climates…lot of things more, your mind change, well, at least me, I see the life from other angle, my life change. I love to travel, and I wish that everybody could have this opportunity. I live in South America, the life here is so different to North America, and North America so so different of Africa!!you could see that from you own. Your job is great, because you have the chance of making two things that you love! I hope that you continue your freindship with Emily, I saw her a lot of times in Everwood!!I can´t believe that now I could see both working together!! Sorry for my English, bye
