Mari’s ‘Mazing Mursday: Early Canada Day Edition, Eh?!
Boa Madrugada GBD’ers!
Tis Mari, remember me?! I’m the one who enthralls you with such amazing content almost every Thursday (lets overlook the ones I missed, shall we?). Now that we’re re-acquainted, let’s get serious.
Do you know what today is? No? Well, it’s Canada Day! That’s right, we beat the US by 4 whole days. That’s how amazing we are! And if you don’t think that’s enough, let me remind you of the Burning of Washington. That’s right, we burnt the White House down, so don’t mess with us, eh?!
Since I’m fairly new to this country, I’ll let Gertie tell you what today is all about. Sit down children, it’s story time.
“Happy Canada Day, everyone! Even if you’re not Canadian

OK, so…Anyone ever wonder how this awesome country came to be? Well, like usual, you’ll find out anyway

Enter the 15 and 1600’s. England and France both lay claim to the lands that now compose the country we all know and love. First steps: Setting up the missionaries to convert The Natives (Not even gonna get started on this one. I’ll rant another day, because the horrid things they did deserve to be ranted about!) and getting citizens from the Mother Country over to set up farm shop and get at the goods trading. As you probably guessed, France’s biggest part of upper North America was riiiight where Quebec is now. It wasn’t called Quebec though. Nuh-uh, twas New France and Ontario was Upper Canada, the largest chunk of English land. Oh no, I smell a territory war coming.
They definitely had a war and it was nothing like the gang war in West Side story, HA! It was however, one that France didn’t win. Long story short, after a whole bunch of fighting and trading and annexing and all that jazz, England had control over the colonies (now known as provinces) and they lovingly referred to this cluster of colonies as British North America.
So a whole bunch of other stuff happened, like rebellions and fighting and The US trying to conquer British North America in 1812 (we totally burned The White House down then by the way; refer to Mari’s greeting), etc, etc. I’d go into detail, but we do not have the time, people. Anyways, after lots and lots of meetings and deliberating, four of these colonies signed The British North America Act and guess what they did! They peacefully became a country! The first ever! Can I get a shoutout to Ontario (Upper Canada), Quebec (Lower Canada after England got them), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick?! YAY! So eventually the other provinces and territories joined with Canada and we got the Canada we have today. Isn’t it great? It’s great… eh?!”
So there you go, people! Happy Canada Day to you all! If you’re Canadians, do let us know how you plan to/usually celebrate today! Pictures are welcome! If you’re not… well, I feel bad for you. Hehehe… naw, seriously now, if you’re not Canadian feel free to let us know if you have a similar celebration, and the history behind it!
Remember people: knowledge is power.
