Mari’s ‘Mazing Mursday: Early Canada Day Edition, Eh?!

Boa Madrugada GBD’ers!

Tis Mari, remember me?! I’m the one who enthralls you with such amazing content almost every Thursday (lets overlook the ones I missed, shall we?). Now that we’re re-acquainted, let’s get serious.

Do you know what today is? No? Well, it’s Canada Day! That’s right, we beat the US by 4 whole days. That’s how amazing we are! And if you don’t think that’s enough, let me remind you of the Burning of Washington. That’s right, we burnt the White House down, so don’t mess with us, eh?!

Since I’m fairly new to this country, I’ll let Gertie tell you what today is all about. Sit down children, it’s story time.

“Happy Canada Day, everyone! Even if you’re not Canadian :P

OK, so…Anyone ever wonder how this awesome country came to be? Well, like usual, you’ll find out anyway :D

Enter the 15 and 1600’s. England and France both lay claim to the lands that now compose the country we all know and love. First steps: Setting up the missionaries to convert The Natives (Not even gonna get started on this one. I’ll rant another day, because the horrid things they did deserve to be ranted about!) and getting citizens from the Mother Country over to set up farm shop and get at the goods trading. As you probably guessed, France’s biggest part of upper North America was riiiight where Quebec is now. It wasn’t called Quebec though. Nuh-uh, twas New France and Ontario was Upper Canada, the largest chunk of English land. Oh no, I smell a territory war coming.

They definitely had a war and it was nothing like the gang war in West Side story, HA! It was however, one that France didn’t win. Long story short, after a whole bunch of fighting and trading and annexing and all that jazz, England had control over the colonies (now known as provinces) and they lovingly referred to this cluster of colonies as British North America.

So a whole bunch of other stuff happened, like rebellions and fighting and The US trying to conquer British North America in 1812 (we totally burned The White House down then by the way; refer to Mari’s greeting), etc, etc. I’d go into detail, but we do not have the time, people. Anyways, after lots and lots of meetings and deliberating, four of these colonies signed The British North America Act and guess what they did! They peacefully became a country! The first ever! Can I get a shoutout to Ontario (Upper Canada), Quebec (Lower Canada after England got them), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick?! YAY! So eventually the other provinces and territories joined with Canada and we got the Canada we have today. Isn’t it great? It’s great… eh?!”

So there you go, people! Happy Canada Day to you all! If you’re Canadians, do let us know how you plan to/usually celebrate today! Pictures are welcome! If you’re not… well, I feel bad for you. Hehehe… naw, seriously now, if you’re not Canadian feel free to let us know if you have a similar celebration, and the history behind it!

Remember people: knowledge is power.

Great article Marianne! I think Americans beat us by about 90 years though, rather than us beating them by 4 days :) .

Qikipedia, a British twitter account run by the Quite Interesting Elves, has posted some Canadian fun facts in honour of our National holiday:
“Canada has the highest tides and the highest standard of living in the world. Happy Canada Day!”
“Canada has at least 3 million lakes: there are so many that no one has ever counted them all: http://tinyurl.com/4z2gvz
“Canada is the world’s leading producer of wood. It has the largest bay, the longest coastline and the oldest rocks in the world.”
“Canada Day mini-quiz: What’s the missing name and why? 1. Lee 2. Wong 3. Chan 4. – 5. Kim 6. Chen”
“Canada Day mini-quiz answer: Smith. It’s the 4th most common surname in the Vancouver area.”
“Canada Day mini-quiz 2: What did Rain-in-Face, Snake Eater, and Man Afraid Soap achieve?”
“Canada Day mini-quiz 2 answer: They were members of the Kanienkehaka (Mohawk) Canadian lacrosse team that won bronze in the 1904 Olympics.”
“Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian physical education teacher.”
And finally, the one I am most proud of:
“There has never been a war of Canadian origin, nor for a Canadian cause.”

Happy Canada day everyone!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Yay! I wanted to talk abooout it but I forgot…oops but there you were G!

Nice history touch by the way.

What did I do today…well let’s see…MOVED!
Yeah, right….in Quebec we have a tradition..well, I think it’s a law…:

Apartment contracts ALL end on July 1st…making it a day were streets are full with movers trucks and and people everywhere with couches in their hands. I saw a car from Alberta and I was wondering what the people were thinking about us honestly… More than 200 000 people moved today!

So, heading to university next Fall…in Quebec City(where the last batal between England(Wolfe) and France(Montcalm) took place on Abraham’s Plains) I had to move… because I work here for the summer…and so is my brother…. and it’s 1h30 from our hometown.

sooooo this morning…no Canadian flag at sight..just mats and tables my parents helped us out to move my brother and I..but then, it’s cleaning and painting time! whoa…and both our apartments were on the third floor by the way…no elevator…vive le cardio!

and then at 5 I went to work.

There were fireworks here and there and little girls with a flag in one hand (actually, I saw 2) and that’s it..Canada Day Everyone…well not that much in Québec which I think is shameful.

I suspect a long time issue or boycotting from Québec that has put the moving day right on the same day Canadians should celebrate..:(

The thing is, Quebec Day or La Saint-Jean-Baptiste or La fête nationale which all are different names for it, is on June 24….so usually, Québecers drink and drink and drink and oh yeah, celebrate, on June 23, and attend huge public shows, major ones happening in Québec City( June 23) and Montréal (June 24). So it’s like, exactly one week later: Canada Day! In which, in this one, people or more wise and go play with their kids more and attends fireworks and that all.

Sooo I would love to know what it’s like to be a Canadian actually celebrating it! :D

I guess I would have to go to Ottawa one day, on the 1st of July, to see what it’s all about:P

2009-1867= 142 years old! :O We still look so young, eh? :P

This is sooo fascinating!! Happy Canada Day!

Gertie – great crash course on Canadian history – you rock because you recognize knowledge is power. And if you failed to learn from history, you are bound to repeat it or something like that.

Mi – your list of Canadian facts is very informative.

Marilyne – I can’t believe it’s a law to end apartment contracts on a specific day. That is amazing.

Thank you all my Canadian friends for educating us on Canada Day and the history of Canada. Although I’m American, I have Canadian cousins and it’s very interesting because if my parents had decided to immigrate to Canada, rather than the U.S., I’d be Canadian and vice versa. So, it’s red, white, and blue and fireworks for me. Lots of spending time with family and friends, too :D

What a way to celebrate Canada’s birth, renew a lease lol. Ahh, the things we do.

Oh yeah, Marilyne, Canada’s lookin’ good for her age.
