Writingcise! Déjà vu! Sorta, but not really.

Yo yo yo!  This is Kathy.  Mari’s not feeling so well.  Poor Mari. :(  Everyone send Mari your good vibes so she gets better INSTANTLY!

So instead of a Mursday, I’m going to re-post Kailin’s first Writingcise from way back when.  Why?  To give y’all another chance to dazzle us with your mad writing skillz.  Why?  Because writing is fun!  Also because we’re making a video of the poems you wonderful gals have submitted so far.  And by “we’re making a video” I really mean Binks is making the video.  I know.  Someone tell Binks to tone down her awesomeness cuz it’s getting stuffy in here.

If you want your poem to be featured in the video, the last day to submit is next Tuesday 8/11 (not this coming Tuesday).  The bosses and all them are on Pacific Time, even though the cool people know that Eastern Time is where it’s AT. ;)  So when that clock turns midnight (Pacific Time) and Tuesday is ovah, it’s OVAH.

So here’s Kailin with the writing assignment. And while you’re at it, check out the poems other people have written in comments. Oh…you can submit your poem in comments (for this post or this one).

******************************

At the most marvelous retreat some of us gals had the privilege to participate in, and where I was so honored to be a part of as a inspirational speaker and to teach a Creative Writing class (which due to timing didn’t become a class, but part of the speech), (which gave me the chance to go have fun and play with the horses with Marcus and the K’s. Oops the founding K’s, since I’m a K, too,)  I became aware of  one passion a lot of you share.   So in the midst of having fun, playing, and enjoying the nice open air, I realized a lot of you gals love writing.

Obviously writing is one of my biggest passions, too! Especially Creative Writing. So, on Wednesdays (not every Wednesday), but more like once in a while…monthly???, we’ll have an online mini writing retreat. Sounds good? Writingcise Wednesdays! Yay!

Oh, by the way, I don’t go by “Sparklesoup” on a daily basis, but by Kailin, that’s where the “K” I mentioned earlier comes from. Sparklesoup is the name of my book publishing/media and film production company that started in 2001.   For those of you on Facebook, I’m there, too!  So if you want, you can call me Kailin, Aunt Kailin, Sparklesoup, Her Awesomeness, The Artist Formerly Known as Most Awesome…or my fav – She’s So Awesome She Can Refer to Herself in 3rd Person. Long, but perhaps the most accurate description of Kailin’s awesomeness. Because Kailin thinks awesome is as awesome does. And Kailin thinks this post should be all about Kailin. 3rd person, that’s what Kailin referring to herself as Kailin instead of “I” means for all you wonderfully confused international women out there wondering WT?  We’ll talk about 3rd person later on when it comes to another Writingcise in the future about creating characters.

So, this post and the first Writingcise Wednesdays exercise will be about International Women and of course, your favorite topic, YOU! So, for me, it’s me!

This exercise is about you, freeing your mind to write, and empowerment. This is a Kailin writing exercise, exclusively created for GBD.   So please participate because normally this stuff isn’t, like, free (I teach workshops like these at colleges and conferences)  except the K’s and I got along so well…and I well, wuv you girls!   So, enjoy and have fun with it!

Here’s the Assignment:

1) Take the word, “Women“. Write whatever words first come to your mind about the word, “Women.”

2) Take the word, “International.” Write whatever words first come to your mind about the word, “International.”

3) Take your name, for me, it’s “Kailin Gow“. For Kendra, it’s “Kendra Voth”. For Kristin, it’s “Kristin Kreuk”. And yes, you guess it! Write whatever words that first come to mind that describes YOU.

Now you have a cluster of words you can use for your poem.

Here’s my Example:

——————————————————

1) Women – Strong, Unique, Beauty, Kind, Gentle, Loving, Child-bearing, Mother, Glue, Family, Leader

2) International – Global, World, Everyone, Connected, Reaching Out, Harmony, Peace, Free

3) Kailin Gow – Woman, Daughter, Mother, Wife, Writer, Observer, Giver, World Citizen, Passionate, Open and Honest, Vulnerable and Strong, Loves people, Me.

—————————————————–

Kailin’s Writingcise Example:

Wild Wind Brings me Women Whispers
Mother, Daughter, Wife, and Leaders
Connected glue kind Harmony brings
Global peace loving that everyone sings
I sing a song, this writer sings
“Beauty tames the gentle Beast”
Through passionate open honesty
I am uniquely Free to be Me.

—————————————————-

Now, it’s your turn. Turn the word clusters above from what you’ve written for the 3 words/phrases into a statement about YOU. Is this YOU or is this the YOU you want to become? If so, what are ways to help you achieve this?  Write this statement (yes, it’s like a mission statement) about you (like I did above) and post it in this post’s comments.  Be proud of who you are and share it with everyone here at GBD!   If you aspire to be what you’ve written about yourself, the first step is to write it then say it out loud and post it.

And about International Women’s Day – It’s celebrated all over the world, since 1911. Here’s a link to the official page.

There are ways you can help celebrate this day, too (maybe next year?) Anyone can. I did back in college by creating a parade and female film festival on my college campus. First one ever in the county. Maybe you can start something up, next year!!

This was both fun and a challenge because if there’s an irrational fear I have, is that to poetry (I’ll have to add that to my Sexy 7). I just find myself unable to do it right! LOL But I gave it a shot, thanks for the writingcise Kailin! :D (It’s not a conquered fear, but it’s a start, right? LOL)

This is not only a statement that I will follow, but one that I’d like for others to follow if they find it suits them as well. :) Sometimes we need a little reminder of how wonderful we all are.

I think this is the me I am right now and the me I want to become, someone who believes in herself completely. It’s a work in progress, we have to work at it and stop doubting ourselves.

Hope the poetic structure is correct :D

Intricate brilliance brought in unison,
Sensible and volatile dreamers bloom,
Often careless to what her light may bring,
She is reminded of the hope she’ll spring,
‘Be the hope to generations to come’ ,
Adamant as to who speaks these words,
Humble and genuine beauty she sheds,
That before her eyes will soon spread.

Jenipher – you are on a roll! With all your notes and writing for GBD, you even did a WritingCise!

Don’t worry about the poetic structure here. This is an exercise in getting you to feel free to write. Your positive enthusiasm for life and encouragement to other ladies here on GBD is beautiful. Your poem is full of life and glows with your warm personality :D

Keep writing for your writing is uplifting and motivating. Well done, girl!
:D

Sorry…I should’ve said this earlier, but it’s because of Kathy’s enthusiasm and persuasiveness that WritingCise is back on GBD. Actually, she’s the one to convince me to have a WritingCise on GBD once a month or two on Tuesdays.

And Kathy is right about Binks being awesome for agreeing to put the video together.

It’s going to be a pretty cool one, too :D

yay for writingcises, or is it writercising? lol This was a great exercise, I actually have the poem I wrote hanging up on my wall along with other inspiring quotes to keep me on track to becoming my ideal version of me.
So does that mean you’re going to be doing one of these every month or a few times a month Kailin?

@Kailin- And I must be honest, it’s my first one! :D It was very fun! Glad to know the poetic structure didn’t really matter. YAY! One step closer to conquering my poetic fear LOL Thank yous!

@Alyssa – you should be proud of your poem! It takes guts to introspect, write about yourself in a poem, post it on GBD, and put it on a wall in your bedroom. What’s so cool about this writing versus the inspirational quotes you have on the wall? It’s written by YOU. You are the author of your life, and the director of where you want to head. I’m so glad you had fun writing. There will be more WritingCise to come!

Tuesdays every month or every 2 months, depending on participation. For a short time, we’re gonna try to display the writings in an artistic way, too. Because we have to have some fun with our writings, right?

@Jenipher – you’re first poem???? Wow, you’re a natural. Bravo for writing a poem and posting it on GBD, too. Girl, you’ve got guts. LOL!

That’s a lot of brain power. And thanks to Kathy for bringing it back. Kudos to Kathy!!

This is me as I am right now in the middle of my teen years and my growing adult years. It’s what I believe in for my morals as well as a strong eco-friendly world to live on. We should be joining hands and singing and laughing than fighting and agruing.

Traveling Experiences break culture barriers
Strong and Independent women break country barriers
Creative and loving enforcements are built
Sisters, cousins, co-workers making global quilts
I am a designer, you guys are my inspiration
“Be the change you wanna see happen.”
Loving and kind co-workers
We can make the world one strong diversion.

Oh, and I hope Allison Mack doesn’t mind but I used her quote “Be the change you wanna see” or something like that, it’s a really powerful quote. :)

Hey Ashley20 – your poem definitely expresses who you are. You’re an open-minded person with a global perspective. Yes, if we break down barriers in all aspects, we would find we share more similarities than differences. This is so in race, gender, religion, and culture. Why put up barriers and think everyone fits to a “T” what labels and stereotypes they fall under? If we are to achieve peace and harmony, we as people would need to look beyond labels and find the common bond we have as people. Very deep stuff, Ashley20. Bravo!

Oh, about the quote about the change, if you quote someone, you must give them credit. Actually, Allison’s quote is very similar to Ghandi’s “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” Ghandi also said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Yes, powerful quotes.

There are many versions of this theme, such as JFK’s “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” And then there’s his famous quote, “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

Thank you Susana/Susy! It was meant to be. Will have another WritingCise when the video is done. In the meantime, for those who enjoyed the WritingCise exercises, my WritingCise book containing more complicated exercises and self-esteem stuff (and has been in the making for over a year now) will be out this October :D
