News Day Tuesday: VMA Drama

‘Sup GBD!

So the other day, I sent out an email to a bunch of behind-the-scenes people who run this blog, and Mari spammed us saying she was sad that there was no one on that email list to discuss “VMA drama.”  I care about Mari’s emotional well-being, and so I am dedicating today’s News Day Tuesday for y’all to discuss with each other and with Mari the VMA drama.

I wasn’t aware there was VMA drama until I heard about it from other people.  In fact, I wasn’t really sure who Taylor Swift was either.  Have no idea what she sings.  Binks will not be pleased by this and will indoctrinate me with another pop culture lesson.  Anyway, my understanding is that Kanye West stole a bit of Taylor’s (Swift, not Nikole) spotlight by taking her mic and raving about Beyonce?  I dunno.  I didn’t watch it.  But I do know he apologized afterwards, even to Taylor’s mom.  And I think again the following night when he appeared on The Jay Leno Show (this is all based on what I read in the news…I haven’t actually watched or read anything directly from Kanye).

Anyway, the VMA drama got me thinking…when my cousin first told me about what Kanye did, I was disappointed because I like Kanye’s music.  I think he’s talented at coming up with catchy beats and songs.  I buy his music.  So in essence, I support his art.  Now, I know he’s done this type of thing before at awards shows.  In fact, if he doesn’t watch it, he’s going to become part of the American lexicon.  Like, “Don’t pull a Kanye.”  Or “Dude was all Kanyed out!”  Anyway, what I’m wondering is, if I support his art, am I then indirectly supporting the person?  Can you separate the art from the artist?

I know, I know.  “Dude, Kathy.  It’s just the VMAs.  Chill.”  Perhaps that incident isn’t the best example to use.  So how about this one.  Not too long ago, there was that whole media blitz about Chris Brown and Rihanna.  That’s definitely more serious.  Is it possible for me to buy his music without indirectly condoning his behavior?

Or how about this…paintings (supposedly) by Adolf Hitler have been auctioned off.  I think the most recent auction sold 3 of his paintings for $60,000.  If he were still alive, would people still pay that kind of money for his art?

So discuss GBD!  And have a good rest of the week.

i can’t believe he did that though! she just won the award for best female video and then kanye comes and tells her that beyonce had one of the best videos of all time! not that i disagree but he embarrassed her on national television! i still listen to his music but i don’t like him. his actions are speaking louder than his words.

I love it how you actually get the right side of my brain, Kathy! :D Seriously, I mean it!

Well, I went to the MTV website and checked the clips out, it’s one of those things you have to see for yourself before saying anything about it. (yup…I didn’t watch the VMAs, I don’t have cable) I simply have no words for what he did. But you know what Kathy? People are already saying “Don’t pull a Kanye!” my [boy] cousin actually said it today! LOL

I think it’s two different things we talk about when you ask if we’re supporting the art or supporting the artist but in a freakishly real kind of way, you really are supporting him and the person he is. Artists express themselves and the person that they are when they do music, or when they paint something (so…are we indirectly supporting their behavior and the things they do out from their professional world?)

It’s awfully confusing, and sorry I couldn’t come up with a straight answer, but I’m sort of caught in the middle. LOL

Kathy, Kathy, Kathy *shakes head* Yes. You can expect another pop culture lesson soon. >_> BE WARNED!

Anywho, Taylor Swift is an amazing talent, she mixes country with what I’d think is pop. And every single one of her songs rock my sox. B-) The point was Kanye is continuously disrespectful about various things, and this time with Taylor Swift he crossed the line. I did however, think it was really sweet of Beyonce to give up her own speech time to allow Taylor to finish hers. YO GO GIRL. So yeah. Kanye -_-

As for your question Kathy, I’ll agree with Jenny and say that’s a tough thing to answer lol. I loved Chris Brown’s music but ever since the fiasco with Rihanna I’ve tried to avoid his stuff for the same thoughts you posed. “Can I support his music without supporting him?”. I’d like to think that I can, in some way at least. Or maybe, just try to support one aspect of the person he is. The same goes for Kanye.

i already hated kanye when he began comparing himself to God. have some humility man. he should be thanking someone for his talents and success, not constantly boasting about everything and how he’s the best. personally, if you are the best, people will recognize it, as in the taylor case. obviously beyonce was not the best video in the category so taylor won.

for me its hard to separate the person from their art/production. though his songs are catchy, if i dont respect the person as a whole, i cant really enjoy their productions. who they are as a person means more to me than how good they can sing/dance/whatever. but thats just my opinion. :D

That was a major faux-pas for Kanye even Obama knows it! hehe
Nice reaction though from Beyoncé and I think that the artist is a person first so encouraging an artist is encouraging the person too, I think it’s unfortunate but it’s fair.

Good evening Girls By Design again I`m humbled.

Kanye West grew up in the Chicago Metropolitan area where I am from actually. I can`t fathom the idea why Kanye would outburst like this by him being such a genius and all at what he does, course this is not the first time he`s actually outburst. He also had academics as well, I`m a bit confused when it comes to Kanye West because I actually like the guy in terms of his music? I do believe in freedom of speech, but where`s the cause?

With all of Kanye`s money, fame, and talent why not speak for good causes although I`m sure he does in someway?

I`ve never heard Taylor Swifts music however each talent is very unique and different so I`m sure she good also. If VMA felt that she deserve the award rightfully so! Of course Kanye apologized for his mistakes, and that’s to be commended but it would just seem to me that if as a person in his position that he`s well off and recognized that he would speak up for some positive causes which I`m sure he does, but this latest outburst says to me “petty”.

How can a person interrupt another persons moment an say “I like your music, but by the way this other person`s better”. Hmm… to me this says that this person doesn`t have respect for the other`s talent. Also to me it says that he`s really dissatisfied by the way the industry has treated him.

Still that’s no excuse. I do hope this anger he has towards the industry and life in general can subside in him because when he doesn`t have conversational issues, he`s quite a remarkable talent. Peace Girls By Design, Good Evening.

I just experienced something like this today…it doesn’t feel good but hey, I’m sure she is fine by now. I’m still trying to shake it off, I can’t stand to carry this stuff around. It feels too heavy.

Anyway, it was a bad thing that happened to her, but it’s good to see others response was not the same. For all the bad, I also saw all the good too! It was very interesting…

I suppose we never know what will come out of us until we are squeezed, or challenged to reflect our character under pressure. It’s only then when we learn what kind of person we really are.

It’s all very useful in the end.

i appreciate all sorts of music even way back John Newton’s Amazing Grace, to the Beatles, to Debbie Gibson, to MC Hammer, to Mercy me & Casting Crown, to Destiny’s Child, to Hannah Montana… but this girl, she had her moment and some bad a** is ruining it, that is totally humiliating…but thanks to Beyonce who is ever humble, who gave back Taylor her moment…and the applause from the audience is just fascinating. artists should understand each other as they all belong in one industry. be thankful of whatever gift you have, but no one has the right to ruin somebody else’s moment just because for the sake of it.

Whether Miss Swift is well known or not, she did win the award and it was her moment. It was in very poor taste that Mr. West did that. When Beyonce gave back Miss Taylor’s moment when Beyonce won an award. Beyonce is a true star.

I was also wondering if Mr.West was high on drugs or drunk with alcohol because of the way he was carrying on.
