Reverse Trick-or-Treating!
Catherine told us about this really cool Halloween event called Reverse Trick-or-Treating. Basically, instead of going around asking people to give you candy, YOU do the giving. The goodies being given are fair trade chocolates.
The purpose of Reverse Trick-or-Treating is to raise awareness of the problems in the cocoa industry – problems like child labor and environmental abuse. The chocolates come with a card explaining these problems and how Fair Trade provides a solution.
What does it mean when something is certified as Fair Trade? Basically, it means that it has met a set of standards. These standards aim to give producers a fair price for the stuff they sell, help producers develop their businesses further, promote environmentally sustainable business practices, and protect the workers. It’s a lot of stuff. There’s a whole governing body that sets the standards and another one that gives out the certifications and everything. If you’re interested, you can read more about it at the Fairtrade site.
Anyway, back to the cool event! So you wanna know the best part? THE CHOCOLATES ARE FREE! That’s right – FREE! All you have to pay for is shipping, which is just $5.50 in the States. Five-freakin’-fifty people! That’s like giving up one of those Frappuccinos or other such frothy concoction. Summer’s over anyway. So you have no excuse!
The deadline to request a Reverse Trick-or-Treating kit is October 13. Supplies run out fast, so get to it!
And and aaaaaaand…you know what would be super duper cool? If you documented your Reverse Trick-or-Treating adventure and told us about it on the blog! YEAH! To earn major fair trade brownie points from us, send your writing/audio/video/art/other fabulousness about your Reverse Trick-or-Treating adventure to kathy@girlsbydesign.com.
Also, G would like me to tell you that there are 35 days left until Halloween. She really likes Halloween. It gives her an excuse to throw rotten eggs at cute 6-year-olds dressed as Pokemon or whatever it is kids are into these days.
Thanks to Catherine! Who intends to go as a Ninja Turtle in pink leotards this year.

September 26, 2009Thanks a lot G, now I know I have 35 days left before I’m an old timer. This sounds interesting, but if I do this, I’ll just end up leaving it outside my dorm room or something. My school’s Pugwash Club goes around on Halloween and collects electronics from people and recycles them so people don’t be throwing away stuff and ruining the environment. I have yet to participate, but it’s not exactly my ideal way of spending my birthday lol.
