Gooooood morning GBD!

How many of y’all are freaking FREAKING OUT over college apps right now?? ;)

Marlee has started along that road by visiting some colleges over the summer.  And she’s so awesome she decided to share her experiences with us.  Take it away Marlee!

Hi ladies of GBD!

I wanted to share an experience I had over the summer which also applies to this year.

In August I went on a college tour on the East Coast.  For many high schoolers, and probably most juniors, the college search is just beginning.  There are so many choices and it can be very stressful, but after looking at schools, I not only gained knowledge about the colleges themselves, but also learned a lot about what I want to accomplish.  Going on a tour or doing research can force you to think about your interests, views, and qualities in a new way.  It might also help you decide what type of college you want to apply to.

Take me for example.  At home I am crazy and outspoken, but in the classroom I am more reserved.  Colleges look for good teacher recommendations, so I realized that this year I need to change and set goals for myself.  Now if there is a class discussion, I contribute fully and the teacher knows what my personality is like.  Just making that one change has inspired me to try new activities as well.  I run cross country, tried choir for the first time, and have been researching other ways to help the community.

The process of looking at colleges allows you to understand yourself better and to see where your interests truly lie.  In other words, the college search is not just about finding a good school, it is about recognizing your strengths and developing as a person.

If you’ve got some insight into the college application process that you’d like to share, email me!

Thanks to Marlee!  Who has inspired me to try something different as well.  Like going to sleep by midnight. ;)

Hey Marlee! Thanks for sharing. I know that for a lot of high school seniors, applications are due at the end of this month or at the beginning of the year. The best advice I can give to anyone applying to college is not to procrastinate, to give yourself a variety of options by applying to several schools you’d be willing to attend, and definitely to make the most of those college visits – they tell you more about whether the school is right for you than any web site or viewbook can! Good luck!

Marlee, if you inspired Kathy to do something like that, you must have some special powers!

I have a perfect solution to freaking out over college applications…Avoid them like the plague! *looks around*

I absolutely agree. Going for a visit of the campus really helps knowing if that college is right for you, which should because you’re going to be around it for a couple of years to come hehe

good luck!
