News Day Tuesday: The Wind Kids

Science class gets a bad rap. It’s real a shame too because there is SO much potential for awesomeness if you’ve got the right people in the mix.
Milford, Utah has the right people in the mix. High school teacher Andy Swapp and his students set up this huge tower outside to measure wind power just because they were curious, as all good scientists are.
Well, what started out as a project for science class ended up paving the way for a 200 mega-Watt wind farm in their community. That is a mega big deal. The wind farm has brought jobs to their town, revitalized their economy, and now provides power to tens of thousands of households in Southern California.
And they’re students! Like many of you. High school students with a passionate teacher and a supportive community.
It’s pretty incredible what we’re capable of.

November 24, 2009That’s what I liked about science classes in Hich School: seeing it materialize! Cause otherwise, equations in books are…well not that interesting until you use them for a project!
