What music makes you get up and dance? Or lift you from a dead slumber when it’s time to get up? We asked around, and this is what they told us:

Genre – Or “I couldn’t just pick one song!”

Awesome Rock songs will make me want to play guitar and like…Salsa and Techno can make me want to just get up and dance, or buzz around somehow.
~Sarah G

I love Hip-Hop, which usually surprises people, because I grew up listening to Classical music (only) and I am a big fan of Opera. Spanish Hip-Hop and Reggaeton are also favorites that make me want to get up and dance.
~Cat S

It’s not so much the song as it is the people I’m with. Usually the right combination is my cousins plus some Hip-Hoppy/Dance track that we all know. The cheesier the better.
~Kathy C

Anything with a good, fun beat! I love Hip-Hop and Rap.
~Jessica F

I LOVE old 80’s music, sometimes I’ll just put on one of my mom’s 80’s CD’s and my whole family will end up dancing around the room- we have such a great time!
~Krista K

I like to bust it out to Early 90’s Hip-Hop. Something I can dance to and sing as loud as I want at the same time. I prefer it if I know all of the words, though others may not prefer it when I sing them. Don’t tell me “Bust A Move” doesn’t make your booty shake. Okay, I also like random cool songs I find that are dance-worthy.

story-2

So if your life had a theme song playing along with it, what would it be?

Binks and I discussed this a while back and we decided that it would be “Main Offender” by The Hives haha.
~Sarah G

Off the top of my head, I like “Fallin’ Up” by the Black Eyed Peas. Not so much because I live my life with the braggadocio of a swaggering rapper, but because that song is a good example of the type of rap music I like, and the chorus is among my favorites – it has a really good rhythm and flow, and I think it’s clever and captures my general outlook: “We be fallin’ up, never fallin’ down. We keep it at a higher level, elevated ground.” Rolls off the tongue it does. :)
~Kathy

“Speed of Sound” by Coldplay. This song really means a lot to me. I listen to it all the time because I think it’s got a really beautiful meaning!
To me this song is all about waiting for the future and feeling all sort of mixed emotions because you don’t exactly know what to expect when you get there.
Being young, I feel exactly like that. I’m excited for the future but nervous too because I don’t know where exactly life’s going to take me. (Hopefully it will be something involving a stage, a microphone and a band!)

This is one of my favourite quotes from the song:
“Look up, I look up at night
Planets are moving at the speed of light
Climb up, up in the trees
Every chance that you get
Is a chance you seize.”
~Tracey

“The Heart of Life” by John Mayer. The more experiences I have in this world, the more I realize how miraculous it is that any of us are still standing at the end of the day. This song reminds me of the truth that there is good in all of us– pain and tragedy may obscure it– but it is there nevertheless.
Because of these lyrics:
“Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No, it won’t all go away, it should
But I know the heart of life is good.”
~Cat S

“The Goldfish Song” by Kina Grannis
It’s a song about choices, and whether to let things go. She’s talking about letting her heart decide. It’s her decision alone. I love it.
~Jessica F

OMG! This has got to be the hardest question- I like to think that if my life were an ipod I would be on shuffle. I don’t think I would stick to one song. But right now my theme song is “The Best Day” by Taylor Swift, because I’m really feeling grateful for my mom, she’s like the best person ever!

USS, Queens of the Stone Age, Die Mannequin, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metallica and Alice in Chains.

The last few CDs I bought and listened to in the car recently are:
Zee Avi’s self-titled debut (favorite song: “Bitter Heart”)
Estelle’s Shine (favorite song: “American Boy”)
Psychic Stunts’ Panic in Motion (favorite song “Speaker’s Block”).
~Kathy C

“Meet Me on the Equinox”Death Cab for Cutie (New Moon Soundtrack!!! Who’s excited?)

~Tracey

Best of College A Capella 2009 – they do covers of a lot of popular songs with their own flair– creating the instrumentals with their voices. If you’re a fan of the show Glee you’d probably enjoy this!

~Cat S

Flyleaf “Again”
~Jenny

Music I’m into right now….
Hey Ocean- An awesome Canadian Band, kind of jazzy, upbeat and fun. Check out the song “Too Soon”, about whether it’s “too soon” to blurt out :I love you!.
Dustin Kensrue- A sexy crooner with lyrics that make you think. Check out the videos on his site, I love “Pistol” and “I Knew You Before”
Paris Carney- She has a fabulously sweet voice, and watch for her to be featured by GBD in January!
Shawn Pander- His lyrics really get to me too. I love his style.
~Jen P

I am loving Kina Grannis! and Alyssa Bernal!
These are both amazing artists on YouTube. I can’t express how good they are. I’m obsessed with independent artists :) What can I say? LOL

~Jessica F

I’m listening to Joss Stone, and Corinne Bailey Ray. Yeah, I seem to have gotten bitten by the jazzy music bug- I love it!

story-4

Coldplay

So a few weeks back myself and my friend headed up to Dublin (Ireland) to see Coldplay live in concert!
I was seriously way too excited for this concert. We booked them 9 months before the concert and the wait was horrible, but so worth it.
It was general admission so everyone was standing for the whole thing, which only added to the atmosphere. The opening acts (White Lies and Elbow), were really good. They got the crowd going very easily so we were all hyped up for Coldplay.
So when they came on, the crowd just went wild! I never screamed so much in my life!! My knees were weak.
They really put on a terrific show, they jumped around stage, sung every note properly and kept on talking to us. Real crowd pleasers!
The lighting and effects were truly amazing. Some of the artwork that was displayed on the screens and around the venue was so unique.
At one point, thousands of paper butterflies started shooting out of these huge machines and everyone was trying to catch them! There was also two stages in the centre of the crowd so they got to sing with us.
At the end of the concert loads of fireworks went off and I was almost in tears. When the concert was over the main singer (Chris Martin) came back out by himself and thanked us so much. He told us that there would be a free copy of their live album for each of us. I was delighted!
So we had an amazing night. One that I’ll never forget.

~Tracey

Metric

“Hold it/I’m about to drop off/Let me tell you my last thought/Drift into a deep fog lost where I forgot to /Hold it/I can feel you most when I’m alone.”

Ah, Metric, Canadian musicians and you don’t suck. Not even a little bit, not even at all! Yes, I am super critical of my own kind, but it’s true. However, I looooove Metric! LOVE! So when I saw that they were having a concert in my city, I just had to jump on that!

Concert night came around and we piled our butts into the car and made it to the event. The Stills (also Canadian and also darn good) opened for Metric and they were very, very good. They played really loud and really hard. But enough about them! This is about Metric!

So, after a more-than-brief intermission following The Stills, the stage filled with fog and the dimly-lit area in front of us was eerily still until finally, there was life! Duh, it was Metric! Following that was two and a half hours of one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Seriously, they all played hard and Emily (the lead singer) put on a great show. The effects were great, the lighting was just right and the music was LOUD and fast. They did one encore, it was “Monster Hospital” and then just Emily and James did another one, it was an acoustic version of “Combat Baby”.

Metric rocked all of their songs and they were mostly new ones from Fantasies. The old ones they did were “Dead Disco”, “Monster Hospital” and “Poster of a Girl”. I highly suggest you all see Metric if you ever have the chance. You will NOT be disappointed, people. Seriously!

The first concert I ever went to was Coldplay!! and I wasn’t a major fan before but I certainly was after. This was right after they had released their album ‘X & Y’. I sat (stood) in the back with my best friend and I just felt enveloped in this overwhelming mix of music and people. It gave me this magical feeling of infinite happiness. Favorite parts included when Chris Martin started running away with that piano solo on ‘Clocks’, and when they passed the giant balloons through the crowd for ‘Yellow’. Sigh, it makes me nostalgic for my early college days. Haha.
