G isn’t feeling so well, so G isn’t going to ramble on and give an introduction. So without further adieu, I give you the quiz winners! Btw, this particular Griday edition will be in several parts and no, I don’t know how many, so just stick with us! Don’t see your favourite? Give us an e-mail and she’ll get up!

First, we give y’all the old timers.

Little Shirley

Here’s what Elizabeth had to say about Lil’ Miss Shirley Temple:

What is there to say about Miss Shirley? Aside from the fact that she was/is completely awesome. With fifty six pin curls in her hair everyday, she danced her way into the hearts of trillions around the globe. She put a smile on every face when they saw one of her pictures, even the president at the time, FDR couldn’t help but love her. You know you made it when a guy like him goes to see your pictures. Anyways, back to Shirley.

Shirley Temple was born on April 23, 1928 in Santa Monica, California at 9pm. “Too late for dinner, and so I started life one meal behind.” says Temple. She was born to George and Gertrude Temple, a banker and former dancer. She had two older brothers, John “Jack” and George Jr. “Sonny.” Before Shirley was ever in the womb, Gertrude had longed for a little girl with blond curls like the daughters of her two closest buds. So Mr. Temple went to his close pal, who was a doctor, and asked him what he could do to ensure that this child would absolutely be a girl. The doc suggested removing his tonsils. When they grew back, they were removed once more. Apparently it worked like a charm lol.

During Gertrude’s pregnancy she read aloud from literature, went to the theater to see movies and played the phonograph each day. Once Shirley was born, she set her in her crib next to the phonograph playing the popular music at that time. Soon enough, when she started walking, Shirley started keeping time to the music, as best as she could with her little toes. Gertrude enrolled her daughter at Mrs. Meglin’s Dance Studio when Shirley was just three years old. One day two producers showed up to the studio looking for two little girls and six little boys for a series of short films, competing with the Our Gang shorts. Gertrude didn’t have much time, so Shirley was dressed in her usual dress and wore her play shoes. The children rehearsed their best dance and when they were finished, the men decided on who was right for the Baby Burlesques shorts. One of them was interested in Miss Temple, she had a charm about her and could dance greatly. Afraid of how the man looked with his moon shaped face, she ran and hid under the piano. Shirley was then contracted to the Educational Films Corporation and paid $10 a day for four days.

She caught the eye of the Fox Film Corporation, later 20th Century Fox, and was contracted to seven years with the studio. A year after she signed with Fox, she was presented with the Juvenile Award “in grateful recognition of her outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934.” Pretty cool huh? Shirley’s mother explained that it wasn’t for quality that she won the award, it was for quantity. She had made more films in 1934 than any other star, and at such a young age, barely seven, although Shirley at the time thought she was a year younger, but that’s another story. And although she wasn’t chosen in the end for the role, she was once offered to play Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. How cool would that have been to dance on that yellow brick road?

To make a very long story short, Shirley made 14 short films and 43 feature films during her thirty year acting career. At the age of seventeen, she married a man named John Agar. They were only married for five years. Together they had just one child, a daughter named Linda Susan. After her divorce with John, Shirley took Susan to Hawaii for a vacation. There she met her true love Charlie Black, a former Naval Officer, who had never seen one of Shirley’s films, to her delight. They married in 1950 and had Charlie Jr. and Lori Black. Shirley became a U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Ghana, first woman Chief of Protocol, U.S. representative to the U.N. and the U.S. ambassador to Czechoslovakia. She appeared on television also, during the 1960’s, but shortly after quit acting for her love of politics. Today Shirley Temple Black lives in Northern California. In 1988 she wrote the first volume of her autobiography and is working on the second volume. Most of her films have now been released on DVD and video so that future generations like myself can fall under Shirley’s spell.

If you ladies want more information than I can give, although I about have her book memorized by now lol, you can go to Amazon, Barnes & Noble or some other book store and read her autobiography for yourselves. It’s one of my favorite books I have in my never ending library. I’m out ladies!!

Now we move on to Toto’s main gal!

judy

As brought to you by Sharon:

She’s the 8th greatest female star in the history of American cinema, and her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz made her a star. If you’re thinking this awesome starlet is Judy Garland, then you’re right!

Frances Ethel Gumm aka Judy Garland started singing and dancing with her 2 older sisters at the age of 2 ½. The 3 of them were known as the Gumm sisters and took part in many short films. They soon changed their last name to Garland because people laughed at them when they went on stage, haha. At the same time Frances also changed her name to Judy, a much better name for her. In 1953, the sisters decide to spilt up and Judy went solo, signing a movie contract when she was 13.

Later in the same year one of Judy’s song’s, “Zing! Went the Strings of my Heart” debuted on the radio. Sadly, shortly after the debut, her Father, Frank passed away. Even though she was in pain, she still continued making films. The director of many of her films called her an “ugly duckling”; she even had to wear removable caps on her teeth, and things to reshape her nose. Judy was constantly making fast paced films, so to keep up with the pace people gave her amphetamines and barbiturates to take before bed. Taking drugs daily caused her to fall into an addiction and made her ruin the rest of her life. Darn people!

Most of you probably know Judy from The Wizard of Oz, she won the role when she was 16, but I thought she was older, but in the book Dorothy is supposed to be 12. Originally she was supposed to wear a blonde wig, but then the producers changed their minds. They though she was not thin enough, so they made her wear a corset and chose that blue dress just so they could make her appear slimmer. The Wizard of Oz was Judy’s most successful film and brought her a lot of stardom.

Many years later, Judy had a nervous breakdown and had to go to a sanitarium. That same year she attempted suicide for the first time, after she tried again on many other occasions. When she was 47 she died of an accidental drug overdose, leaving behind her 3 children, Liza Minnelli, Lorna and Joey Luft.

Even though she was sent down the wrong path because of the people who thought drugs would help her, she was still one of the greatest starlets of all time.

Kristin’s choice, words and everything by Binks:

Audrey Hepburn. Need I say more?
The lady’s got style, she’s got class, and she’s as sweet as can be. Was there ever a person awesomer? Nope. This shining starlet was born May 4th, 1929. Not only was she an Oscar winner, but a Golden Globe, BAFTA and even Tony winner. She was also voted by the American Film Institute as the 3rd greatest female star of all time (yes, I said ALL TIME :O) Hot Dang! I’d say the woman had talent. She wasn’t all brains and beauty though, she had a heart of gold to boot! and skin that was tough as nails. Even though her legacy is famous, and her name still resounds all over the world, many of us don’t know a lot about her life. For example, I had no idea she survived World War II right smack in the middle of it, living in a Nazi invaded Netherlands. Suffering malnutrition, anemia and edema due to the war, Audrey secretly danced to collect money for the Dutch Resistance. Tough, I tell ya.
After Germany was defeated, Audrey wanted to become a prima ballerina, but since she was so tall and suffered from malnutrition ‘cause of the war, they told her she couldn’t be one. So she decided acting! (HOORAY FOR US, right!? :D ) After some setbacks and minor parts, her first starring role was Roman Holiday in 1952, alongside Gregory Peck. Producers had originally wanted Elizabeth Taylor, but the director, William Wyler loved Audrey’s screen test so much he insisted on her and boy was he right! Ms. Hepburn won an Oscar for Best Actress for Roman Holiday and her career was launched! She received four more nominations in the following years for: Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Wait until Dark and The Nun’s Story.
Audrey Hepburn graced the screens with her fashion, poise and charm and followed the same dedication off-screen with her work for UNICEF, traveling all over the world as their ambassador. George Bush senior gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom (one of the two highest awards a civilian can receive in the US), and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave her The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her humanitarian work.
Sadly, her vivacious life came to an end in January 20th, 1993 after getting appendiceal cancer. But even to this day people all over the world adore her and its for sure that a powerhouse woman like Audrey will never be forgotten. :)

Fun fact: On the set for Sabrina, Audrey went to get her wardrobe from an up and coming fashion designer called Givenchy (maybe you’ve heard of him , yes? …yeah it was that long ago… And we thought the Fossil Dust ladies were old! O_O ) at first Givenchy thought he was giving clothes to Katharine Hepburn, when he saw it was Audrey he quickly dismissed her. Audrey asked for just a few minutes of his time and their friendship skyrocketed from there. They formed a friendship and partnership that lasted all the way until Audrey’s death in 1993.

Now, who chose chose Audrey? None other than Ms. Kristin Kreuk. Although *cough* I wanted Audrey *cough* But since I’m still recovering from the knife fight I had with the goat, i had no energy to fight over this Pioneer Starlet and chose Betty Davis as my fave :D
The reason why Kristin picked Audrey is locked away in Area 51, next to the UFO’s, unicorns and mystical licorice. Some say she hid the secret inside the Bermuda Triangle. But like the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop: the world may never know…..

The mystery lady at the beginning of the post:

Before I start, I’d just like to say that who I am going to be writing about was a self-professed fan of Greta Garbo and John Gilbert! For those of you who don’t know, they were a very famous couple in Hollywood in the late 1920’s. Don’t you just love how all of these gals somehow tie in? It’s a small, small world!

We’re going to play a game. I am going to dish some facts and we’ll see if anyone can guess who I am talking about. If you do, you win nothing, sorry.

-Has 12 Oscar Nominations and has won 4 times, a record that still holds today.
-Was a natural red-head.
-Walked around the studio in her underwear in the early 1930s when the costume department stole her pants from her dressing room. She refused to put anything else on until they were returned.
-Born May 12th, 1907.
-Mother was a suffragette.
-Stood at 5′7, a rarity for actresses in her day.
-Had affairs with Spencer Tracy and Howard Hughes.
-She made no attempt to sugarcoat her true personality for anyone, a personality that was by all accounts feisty and some would say nasty. She was infamous for letting those whom she disliked know it.
-Did all of her own stunts because the stunt gals didn’t stand straight enough.
-Was an avid golfer, tennis player, and swimmer.

Any guesses? It’s Katharine Hepburn!! You all may know her as the chick Cate Blanchette played in “The Aviator,” but we like to think she had some fame before that. Hepburn easily showed Hollywood and the rest of the world that a girl can do just about anything as well a a man can. Heck, she was an athlete and wore pants, no one did that; that’s just how awesome she was! Not to mention, she’s won the most Oscars for “Best Female Performance.” That’s 4, count ‘em, 4 Oscars, people. It’s a Guinness World Record!

Our lovely Newsletter Goddess Jen picked Katharine because:

She was feisty, she did what she wanted, when she wanted to, wore suits to meetings with film studios, kicked butt as an actress, was passionate about what she wanted and believed in, followed her heart and didn’t care what anyone thought of her, as long as she did what felt right to her.

G’s choice!!!!

greta

“Up until Garbo, no one could be feminine and assertive at the same time; with Garbo, it was a revolution.” -Some dude from a documentary.

You know, I just couldn’t think of an introduction to do Greta Garbo justice, just like no biography ever could. The woman’s essence simply cannot be captured with just words. She may have been born a simple girl in Stockholm, Sweden one September 18th in 1905, but simplicity was not in the cards for Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, later Greta Garbo, obviously!

I could just spew and spew about the movies she was in and blah, blah, blah, but I won’t. Garbo was rather mysterious, so we’re keeping with that! Her eyes were her thing. People have quoted that she could do more with her eyes than most people can do with their entire face and this was just in the silent films! Now, she never was one for the lines she was given in the “talkies,” because the lines were just cheesy crap, but she made them work. No, really, I could make several bagels with the cheese in one line and for this, she was named #5 Actress on The American Film Institute’s “50 Greatest Screen Legends.” Yeah, yeah, yeah, Hepburn beat her, put a cork in it! Garbo helped Britain by identifying influential Nazi sympathizers in Stockholm and by providing introductions and carrying messsages for British agents during WWII, so HA!

Did you know that Garbo was not a fan of open sets? Sometimes even the director was kicked out, HA! Here’s why: “During these scenes I allow only the cameraman and lighting man on the set. The director goes out for a coffee or a milkshake. When people are watching, I’m just a woman making faces for the camera. It destroys the illusion. If I am by myself, my face will do things I cannot do with it otherwise.” She also never went to her premieres, the woman would wait and sneak into some random theater in sunglasses and a trenchcoat. Sneaky, sneaky. They say she would also mysteriously materialize when filming was to start and wouldn’t dare stay a second over time, thus is the mystery of Garbo.

Garbo never did any interviews, save for early on in her career and after WWII, she chose to retire at the height of her career and no one knows why. Garbo never married and she lived the last chunk of her life in “seclusion.” It wasn’t as bad as people make it seem, you know how Hollywood is.  On April 15th, 1990, Garbo died due to complications from pneumonia, yet her legacy lives on! Check her out some time, ladies!

FYI, I picked Garbo just because I could!

They are! I should just do a Griday on pictures of old Hollywood stars haha. You never really realize it, but B&W does some amazing things and like Marilyne said, it adds some mystery to them! I also agree with Alyssa, we need more old Hollywood qualities in some peeps today. :)

Kristin? She’s off wrestling some wildebeest tyrant in an effort to liberate a small Africa village in Chad. Hence, Binks being kind enough to put her knife down and call a truce with that blasted goat to bring us all the magic of Audrey Hepburn. And Kendra, she’s still trying to make contact with ET’s clan. Will she? Won’t she? Tune into next week’s edition of “Where are the GBDers Now?”to find out!
