Today we have a special treat for all of you! Oblivious is gonna tell you about something AWESOME! Ya ready?

Here we go!

Hey, beautiful girls!

So I came across this article in the Toronto Star talking about girls living through the “in-betweenie” stages of life (tweens, as the technical term goes =P). It basically explores the thoughts of sixty-five 9-year-old girls, and their views on…well, just about everything! The article touches on subjects like personal identity and aspirations for the future, as well as stereotypical views on gender roles, and how they still affect us today. I thought what the girls had to say was really sweet, and pretty insightful, so I decided to share it with you guys =).

Now that I think about it, “tweenhood” might be the time I remember least in my life; probably because it wasn’t as “defined”, so-to-speak, as the other years (not that I’ve been alive that long, anyways =P).

I guess because it falls near the end of childhood, and doesn’t quite reach into adolescent territory, yet these years just sort of get lost along the way. I mean think about it: it’s always “when I was a kid” or “when I was a teenager”. Never really “when I was a tween”.

We tend to forget the growing years that really transition us from the free-spirited kid to the ladies that we are today– the years that will help shape us into the women we’re about to become.

The article is part of a year-long series entitled “The Secret Life of Girls”, which basically holds the same goal as Girls By Design; to exhibit the awesomeness that is US! I’ve already read a couple of the issues from this month, and lemme tellz ya: these girlies are fabulous!

Here’s the link to the article.

It’s fairly long, but keep in mind, they had SO MUCH to put in. I’m surprised they got it all down on two newspaper pages. There’s also a video that accompanies the article. You should definitely watch it. It’s pretty cute =)

Enjoy, and tell me what you think!

Remember girls: we are an inspiration!

Stay Fresh,

xoxo Oblivious…

I remember when I was that age and there would be kid stuff and teen stuff and I’d always be like, “WTF AM I?! AHHHH!!” I’m glad you wrote about it, because it needs more attention. :)

ohhhhhhhhh I sooooooo remember being this age!…I was a bit of a “mean girl” eeeek! until the day all the girls at my school decided to teach me a lesson…I was sooo sad for so long, I guess the taste of your own medicine is bitter…but it was the best thing that ever happened to me…changed my life really, from then on I changed my ways and started a whole new me :)

These young women are amazing and wise beyond their years.

Wow I actually don’t remember being a tween, my only lasting memory from that time was that my little sister was born. I don’t know if I was thinking about the same things as these girls were, I guess i was, but these issues seem so complex. I’m glad my days of “will the cool kids like me” are far back in my rearview mirror. I think being that age, is harder now than it was 9-10 years ago. The media wasn’t playing such a big role, all the electronic forms of communication weren’t around. But it’s nice to see these girls are positive and for the most part seem happy.
