Don’t just think. Do the change!

(Slogan by Nike)

Do you guys ever get this freakishly awesome idea to do something and then you postpone it because: a) you are currently busy or b) think it would be better for a later date and then totally forget about it? Yeah. Well, you’re not alone.

Laziness is a powerful thing, ladies! And Binks is often overcome by said thing in many forms; the main demon being procrastination. Ya see, Binks used to be really athletic, but somewhere along the lines of school, wasting time, eating and sleeping, exercise became a thing of the past. So starting the New Year, like many (or all) New Years resolutions,  I made a promise to do at least some abs before going to bed for 30 days to create a habit (yeah, it takes a whole month to make a new habit, go figure). At 24 days, I slipped. I started again from zero and at 17 days I slipped again. BLAST! And then I just stopped altogether. The resolution was no more.

What happened was this: I’d think about it and think about it and think about it and then I said “meh” and didn’t do it. Why? Because thinking doesn’t mean anything if you don’t actually act out what you’re thinking! An intention is nice and all, but the road to the Dark Side is paved with good intentions. Doing somethin’ is better than doin’ nothing, right? I found out that when I didn’t think about it too much and just said “DO IT, BINKS, GOSHDARNIT!” I ended up keeping my own promises. Yay me!

Thus, while abandoning the Titanic that is math homework, I jumped ship and found a nice little raft in a different textbook: “If we want to change ourselves in some important way, it’s best not to wait for insight or inspiration. Sometimes we need to act – to begin writing that paper, to make those phone calls, to see that person – even if we don’t feel like acting. To strengthen our convictions, it helps to enact them. In this way, faith and love are alike; if we keep them to ourselves, they shrivel. If we enact and express them, they grow.” – David G. Myers, Exploring Social Psychology

So now, Binks is off to another adventure! Last year, I failed (miserably) to become a pescatarian (means like being a vegetarian, except eating occasional fish) and lasted a mere month. Why? Well, for one, I just went for it and didn’t educate myself at all before doing it: Error #1. Second, I don’t know how to cook, so I’d continue my fast food binge just avoiding the meats: Error #2. What ended up happening was me ingesting vast amounts of pasta and bread whilst gaining some extra chunky pounds. No yay. -_-

This time, though I’m getting ready! I’ve infiltrated forums and bought some reference guides and vegetarian cookbooks, thus learning how to cook and eat better at the same time! WOOO! Starting March 1st, Imma try out being an actual full-time vegetarian for a month and see how it goes. I know what you’re saying right now, “But, Binks, didn’t you just say, just do it? Like the Nike commercials says?” Well, yes, but Binks is cheap and the books from Amazon don’t come until the March 1st, so during this time I’m gonna stock up on some green groceries, educate myself, and nothing think about it too much.  Just do it! I’ll chronicle the journey around the blog every so often, so if you guys want to read up on my fumblings and near-death cooking experiences, then by all means go for it! Besides, if you guys have any tips, I’d sure appreciate it!

How’s about you guys? Have you guys started a new project? Thinking of starting one? Why not chronicle it with me? Tell GBD what you are up to!

Send whatever you wanna share at info@girlsbydesign.com or bianca@girlsbydesign.com. We’d love to hear it!

This topic came at the perfect time for me, I keep telling my self to do certain things, start new things, but I always just think about it and never act. Specifically I want to start doing things to be more creative, I’ve spent way to much time lately being unproductive. I’m just not sure where to start.

Good Luck Binks on being a pescatarian! I have been one for 2 years, but I didn’t really do it the healthy way, I’m still not really doing it the healthy way ;) Just like your error#2 I was eating way too many carbs! So I commend you for doing the research before diving in. What books did you get? I recommend a book called College Vegetarian Cooking by Megan and Jill Carle. It has good recipes that are pretty simple to follow. Morningstar has really good faux meat products. And Sushi is always great instead of fast food, that is if you like it. :D Definitely share how you’re doing once you start.

Binks this is going to be a kick ass journey and I am excited to share in your experience…things around my house are changing in a similar direction as Terry attempts 75% raw food style of eating.

I too am a bit of a scary creature in the kitchen, but am getting better. I made for the first time home made lentil – yam soup for Marcus last night, which he refused to eat…grrrr.
