Today, March 21st (or if you are reading this the 22nd then yesterday), is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The reason this day was chosen was because exactly 50 years ago, police open fired at a peaceful demonstration against Apartheid “pass laws” (laws that segregated people based on their race) at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpevill, South Africa. 69 people died that day. In 1966, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed today and ever since then, every year the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) embark on a program to understand and combat racial discrimination in all its forms.

To read more about some program implements you can go here. This site also has a nice resource for a lot of things relating to today.

Remember this day ladies! We are all beautiful in our diversity! Respect the differences, admire them. Underneath all the uniqueness, we are all inherently similar  :)

Peace, peeps!

Haha @G I would have posted but I hadn’t gotten on. Anywho I think this is such a great post I love the fact that they made that a day & it’s great to know we can all come together & realize that everyone is equal no matter the skin color, where they came from, etc. we are all the same to know that the majority now is starting to become more diverse is just amazing.

Thanks for this great post

It’s almost kind of sad that we need to be reminded not to discriminate. In a perfect world EVERYONE no matter what race, faith, sexual orientation etc would be treated equally.

In regards to the origin of this day, why the heck would they open fire on a peaceful protest!? Sometimes this world just scares me with all the bad stuff that happens. But thankfully things have gotten better.
“Underneath all the uniqueness, we are all inherently similar” I really like that, we should all celebrate our diversity, but inside we’re all human :)
