Media. What is it really? I feel like it’s everything. Tv, billboards, ads, radios, commercials, facebook, myspace, cell phones, newspapers… isn’t it all considered media? Well, my friends and I recently had a discussion with a professor from Penn State University who teaches media. We discussed all of it’s negative aspects, and all of it’s positive ones. I was asked one simple question that blew my mind.
How does media influence you? It’s a harder question than you may think.
I wake up, check Facebook, then I hop into the shower while listening to the radio. Then I get on the bus, listen to my ipod. Get to school, watch the morning tv announcements. I talk on my phone all day, and text too. I walk around the halls passing by girls and boys with ads posted on their freaking shirts! Hollister, Abercrombie, American Eagle… You name it! Then I go to the gym and read magazines. I get home, watch some Tv, get on the internet, listen to some music, and text my friends. MEDIA IS EVERYWHERE. Not only that, but half the things I say are from tv shoes or movies and I don’t even realize it! At any moment can you catch me saying “frickface,” which I picked up from Elliot Reid on Scrubs. Sometimes I’ll say “sweet dee” from Always Sunny In Philadelphia. It’s insane how much influence media has on our lives.
Does it freak you out a little bit that media sort of controls us? It tells us how to speak, it dictates where we are and what we’re doing, it’s got us in it’s grips! Too much? You get my point, right? Or maybe you totally disagree with me. Well, that’s even better! I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Post Away!

May 29, 2010Great one, Caitlin! On the one hand I think you’re absolutely right and sometimes it scares me! I mean I don’t watch much TV – my main media is the internet. I listen to music, watch tv series and also read the newspaper online! It’s just so simple.
But the influence you’re under is not that simple… how often did I catch myself thinking “Oh let’s check what my friend X is doing – let’s go on facebook!” or “I really wanna have the summer season over cause I want to watch my favorite TVs shows again” It’s like an addiction – you’re so used to it that it’d be hard without it!
But on the other hand I wouldn’t have a job if there weren’t the media. I’m working in a media company – we create media, we use media… and I’m getting payed for this.
It’s a mixed blessing…
