What Money Can’t Buy

We’re teens, we have needs: “Moooooomm! can I have some money to buy some shoes?” “Daaaaaaddd! The new iPhone 4G is out! Can I get an advance on my birthday?! PLEAASEE?!”
It’s easy to get caught up in the trends, in the desperate need for a job, especially when the economy is tanking all over the globe. “How am I suppose to pay for college?”, “Blah, I really wanted that jacket!”,”Oooo, 5 dollar footlong subs at Subway! Got any change?” It seems like you need money for everything these days, it’s like you can’t survive without it. It clouds our minds and makes stress lines on, not only our faces, but our parents’ faces as well.
Today’s post is to remind you that money isn’t everything. Remember that time you played hide and seek with your friends? Do you remember how it felt when you first touched snow? The scary feeling of falling when you’re in your dreams, even though you’re safely tucked into your bed? This, is life. This, is what’s really important. It’s not the fact that you’re eating filet mignon for dinner, it’s your brother passing you the rolls and knowing you’re not gonna be alone. It’s feeling the rain on your skin and your heart beat out of control when you really like someone. It’s emotions, memories, friends, family! Sometimes we forget what’s the most important things, even if they’re right in front of our faces. A good way to remind you of this often lost notion, is to make a list of all the things that money can’t buy.
To remind you of how awesome free stuff is, make your list and post it here! It can be as long or as short as you want, just write whatever comes to your mind that doesn’t cost a penny! Here are some examples:
1.) Me and my friends laughing at something stupid.
2) Sitting outside, watching the stars and thinking of everything from philosophical ideas to random things.
3) The bittersweet feeling of things changing, like a graduation, moving to some place different, losing a friend only to gain another one.
Money is pretty cool, but there is an infinite amount of things that are better. The best things in life can’t be bought. Remember that.
Post your list and comment!

July 19, 2010It’s so true! I’ve been working at the YMCA for the past 4 years as a camp counselor. The three past years I was just a volunteer, I was too young to be paid. Now I’m 16 and actually receive a paycheck. I was just thinking yesterday… I had so much more fun at camp whenever I wasn’t getting paid. I mean, now it actually feels like a job, 9-5… everyday. Before it was, well, fun. Money just complicates things. Did that make sense?
The List!
1. Laughing with your friends until you pee yourself. YEs… I’ve done it. Only once though!
2. People watching downtown
3. Finding all your old finger paints that are miraculously not dried up and creating a masterpiece.
4. cloud watching.
5. sledding!
6. digging for earth worms. it was like my main hobby as a 5 year old.
7. hopscotch
the list could go on…
