The True You

Who are you?

If you’ve ever seen “Across the Universe”, then you’ve obviously felt what it’s like to be on an acid trip without even having to drop a thing! But hey, it’s a damn good movie, at least in my opinion. Alas, I am not here to talk to you about that, I just had to get the drug reference in…Kidding! Just kidding! No, seriously, I’m KIDDING! I will, however, take this opportunity to bring up that not-so-lovely Thanksgiving argument between Max and his daddy. Y’all remember it, they argue over whether who you are defines what you do, or if what you do defines who you are.

Now, I happen to think that this argument poses a fantastic question. How are you defined? Do you allow things to shape you, or do you shape what happens, like an expert sculpture? Tell me all about it!

Great post. I’m not sure what defines me or makes me…well me. I am still trying to figure it all out but I can say that one thing that defines me & probably always will is dance. Without it I don’t think I’d be me, it is what I love to do & if someone were to describe me they would say “Oh yeah Susy? Yeah the girl that loves to dance” I’m known as that “The little dancer” and I don’t mind because that is who I am & will never change. I think if I were to die & people remembered me as just that well I think I’d die happy honestly. But again I am still trying to figure out who I am.

Off the top of my head, I can think of a few things: My imagination. My unwillingness to grow old (very different from growing up, by the way). My love of childhood’s simple pleasures. My organizational and planning skills. The fact that I think way too much!

You could say either or, and still say neither. Every time one experiences something it adds to one’s repertoire of things one “knows” about. One can learn from those experiences, one can be changed by them, and one can rise above or thrive in spite of or because of them respectively. But those experiences do not strictly define you, just as what one “knows” about experiences may have evoked something very different for others. Similarly, one’s influence on events and people around you is limited by the fact that no matter how we may animate inanimate objects they are inanimate none the less. Time is a concept that is based on our observance of the inanimate, or a temporary point of view that can give the comfort of a reference point, and help us organize events, but time is also a flexible illusion. Additionally, in the midst of, or the absence of one’s influence, other people are having their own experiences, and having different reactions to those experiences, including me, you, and “us,” if they do encounter one of us. “Fate” as some say, is really just a series of disjointed check-points that are reassuring if you Realize Divine Presence in their gift. What happens in between is most often sociologically semi-organized chaos, with hopefully more good than bad, more calm than frenetic… but excitement can be soo good too!

I believe that deep down inside each of us their is a core of goodness and a longing for that goodness to be both reflected -and- a reality in both the world around us, and others. Life can tarnish that purity, and it is sometimes very difficult to get past the rough spots in life. If one believes in Eternal Life, it is easier to brush off the trials, even if foisted upon one by fools and idiots, but that kind of resilience can also be made into a cruel joke by the sadistic. Ultimately, in the Eternal sense, everyone who is wronged will Triumph, and those who do wrong will be Punished. That is Inevitable, and the reason why there is good reason to be “Faithful” as some say. Still, if somebody is making your life hell… go ahead, give ‘em hell back! I’m just sayin’!

Here’s something I wrote many years ago that had to fit on three lines of so many spaces on a writing pen.

“May God’s Grace Grant You and Yours Eternal Life, Filled with Love, Joy, Peace and Prosperity.”

See that… you thought you were just reading another boring diatribe, and I was making you say a sacred prayer for everyone!

What Laurenelle said… ‘My unwillingness to grow old (very different from growing up, by the way).’ is absolutely fantastic! The funny thing is, there are such paths that actually work, or so it would seem. Ultimately, our spirits are able to never grow old even if they become wise, pious, mature, forgiving, graceful, charitable, loving and loved, always in a sober aspect. A whole lot of fun and excitement can help too, if you don’t lose control.

Thanks Laurenelle!

p.s. OMG! I misquoted myself!!! It should have read, ‘May God’s Grace Bless…’ not Grant. C’est la vie! XOXO <3

well i definitely am defined by myself!! i think these days a lot of people have began stereotyping and saying just because that girl wears blah blah she is an emo or a prep! they sorta make your own shape for you and when and as you grow older you tend to grow outta that shape and the real defined you begins to come out and people begin to think oh they are changing when really you arent so with all of that i think a person is defined by there imagination and the perspective people look at life!!!! yup im wierd!!

Nice comments ladies.

~Susana- That’s awesome that you love dancing because I’ve learned that the only physical activity to offer us protection against dementia is frequent dancing! May you continue to keep happy & spread that positive spirit with others!

~Laurenelle- I agree of being unwilling to grow old. That’s what I still cherish inside every year.

~Rictter 55- I know what you mean on that. As long as you continue to remain humble, always learning new things to gain more valueable wisdom, that’s what keeps us to stay young at heart in a healthy way because that is truly a God given gift for all of us.

~chastityja- That’s right. We actually reveal what we’re made out of through our experiences. When we endure trials or of certain kinds of persecutions that may come upon us, we get to define who we are. But we should be determined to keep imitating those setting the proper examples when it comes to conquering the bad with the good.
