Communication Breakdown
It’ has recently come to my attention that some people believe Canadians to not only be the syrup-sucking ice holes that Steven Colbert called us, but that we also live in a vast frozen tundra of nothing! Well, folks, I’m here to clear a few things up.
1. We don’t live in igloos! Eskimos may, but just because a small percentage does, that doesn’t mean that you should base the entire country off of it.
2. I do not now, nor have I ever had a pet moose and many, man, MANY other Canadians can say the same.
3. We don’t say “PAST-A” funny, you just say it wrong
4. We have cars up here! No, we don’t need snowshoes to get around everywhere. Would you assume that Binks uses a mule to travel, because she’s Mexican?
5. We don’t just play hockey! Zomg, yes, tis true. We play every sport and we even have our own football league! As crappy as it may be…
6. We have Wal-Marts! Yes, we have department stores. Even the evil American ones that put all of the wee businesses out of business.
7. We’ve heard of such a place called Starbucks and a lot of us have unhealthy addictions to it. *cough*
8. We don’t all have polar bears chained up in our backyards.
9. Our money isn’t colourful because we use Monopoly money.
10. We’re not all flappy hat-wearing, plaid-toting lumberjacks! I don’t even know how some of you think this, because you’re usually the same ones who think that we’re all snow all of the time. How does that even work? TELL ME!
11. The closest a lot of us have ever been to a beaver is the back-side of a nickel!
12. Poutine is the best fry invention ever…Well, actually, that one’s true
So, there you have it! Next time you go to say something about a Canadian, think. Be like, “Would I look like a total ignorant *insert nationality here* is a Canadian were to see that?” The answer will probably be “yes”.
However, it’s not just that, it’s anything, really. When we fail to see the full side of things and just blatantly judge based on what we THINK we know, we hurt everyone involved. It creates this communication breakdown and it just muddles everything up. So, what do you do to educate yourselves more? Come on, we want to know!
