Summer Fabulousness
Hailing from Scottsdale, Arizona, The Summer Set consisting of lead singer Brian Dales, guitarists Josh Montgomery and John Gomez, Stephen Gomez on bass, and Jess Bowen on the drums are this summer’s hottest new band.
They became a band merely 3 years ago, and since then, they have been touring and winning the hearts of kids all over North America. Their debut full length album, Love Like This was released in October of 2009. They have been hard at work promoting it on tours and festivals like the AP Tour which wrapped up a few months ago, as well as the annual Bamboozle festival in Jersey last May. 2010 is a huge year for this band, because it also marks their first year on the bill of the punk rock summer camp, also known as Warped Tour.
The Summer Set have been rocking Warped Tour all summer long, and enjoying it every step of the way. The weather in Arizona must have prepared them for this, because they are planning on sticking it out until the tour wraps up in Oregon mid August. I was lucky enough to catch them at a date in Toronto, and their set was the most fun I had all day. They got the crowd pumped up easily, starting with their first single, Chelsea. The energy simply elevated from there, making everyone want to jump up and down and sing along. When they ended their set with their latest single, The Boys You Do (Get Back at You), they left the crowd standing there, wanting to hear more.
These boys (and girl) have found their bit of success quite quickly, but it’s well deserved. Having attended their shows since 2008, I have gotten the chance to get to know the five of them as people, and they are the nicest, most down to earth and humble people. Make sure you catch them when they play in your city soon, because you won’t regret it. And if you do make it out to a show, don’t forget to hit the band up after they play; they’re always hanging out with their fans and they’re easily approachable people. The Summer Set is the next big thing, so don’t be surprised if you start hearing them on the radio in the next couple of years.
Nice skin complexion has been the goal of many masks. The best masks always have the ingredients that you are familiar with– not some chemical ingredient that you can’t even pronounce. One way is to make your own mask. Here are some masks I have tried myself.
Mission I: The Glowing Citrus Mask
Ingredients:
• Egg white
• 1 tbs. of honey
• 1 tbp. of lemon juice
1. I mixed the ingredients. ( It smells great.)
2. I left it on for 30 minutes. (It goes on liquidly. After 5 minutes, it started to tighten on my skin. When 20 minutes passed, I cannot move any muscles other than my eyes. )
3. Then, I washed it off with warm water.
This mask is great for its firming properties. The ingredients are the most important components of any mask. The lemon juice has enzymes that help cleanse the dead cells giving you a refreshed feeling. The vitamin C in the lemon juice causes the tightening of the pores. The egg white also improves your complexion by reducing the appearance of pores. Honey is rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, and antioxidants. It also has healing properties. Anything that is good for you to eat can be good for your face.
I have acne and oily skin. After I used this mask, my face was definitely glowing and I felt that my skin was softer. My pores will absolutely be seeing the honey again.
Success!
Mission II: The Breakfast Mask
Ingredients:
• Egg yolk
• 1 tbs. of honey
• 1 tbs. of olive oil
• 1/4 cup of oatmeal
1. I cooked the oatmeal with ½ cup of water. Then, I let it cool. (It smells like honey.)
2. I mixed all the other ingredients together with the oatmeal.
3. I applied it evenly and left it for 20 minutes.
4. Then, I washed it off.
From the first mission, we found out that the egg white and honey are rich sources of goodies for your skin. What does the olive oil and oatmeal do for your face? The olive oil has Vitamin E and its regenerative properties help rejuvenate the skin. The oatmeal has cleansing and exfoliating properties.
ABORT MISSION!
I tried putting the yellow paste on after I mixed it together, but the oatmeal kept sliding down my face. It was a messy disaster. It was like smashing oatmeal on my skin only to have it dripping off of my chin and leaving the liquid behind. Then, I let the remaining residue on my face. It was hard to wash off. Remember to tie your hair up because the oatmeal may be hard to get out.
Maybe I cooked it too fast? If you dare, try this mask and maybe you can find my mistake. This is a challenge to make the oatmeal stay on the face.
MISSION FAILED

About Jenny
I am a senior in a high school in Brooklyn. I’ve spent my 17 years in the city and can’t wait to get away for college. My passions are in science, music, books and golf. This summer, I am volunteering at a hospital in Manhattan. I am having a great time meeting some of the most amazing individuals in the world. I love listening to the wonderful experiences and life lessons of the older generations. One thing I learned is that the most important thing in a hospital is patient care and I will carry that with me when I go to medical school.
Five things to have in your purse! Well, I’ll start off by saying not every girl is the same, so of course, we all might be a bit different in what we carry with us in our little handy things we call our “best friends”, or as others call them, “purses, bags, handbags, etc” you can call it whatever you want, but it all comes down to this….What do you carry in your purse?
# 5 Goes to: Mascara……Why, you ask? Well, it’s simple, really. Whether you are out on the town, going out for a party, out to school or work, going to the gym, going on a date, etc, whatever the occasion may be, you need this handy little tool to make your eyes pop. Not to mention, it’s small and portable, so you can fit it nicely and neatly inside any little pocket.
# 4 Goes to: Mirrors: If you go through any girl’s purse and you don’t find one of these, well something must have happened. Most girls at least have a mirror to check if they have food in their teeth, others to apply makeup, but of course, we all have it to make sure that we look half decent when we are on that date. Plus, again, it’s something that you can get in any size from small to medium to even one of those handy big ones that basically shows all of your flaws.
# 3 Goes to: Cell Phone: Well, this one is one of the easiest (besides number one), it’s something you can’t go without and not just to text your friends or have it to play games. To put it simply, we all need it for emergency situations…..Okay, okay and texting.
We all need cellphones in our handy purses, you never know when your little talking friend may be of assistance. What if you are on a date and your date is, well, to put it nicely, awful? You need advice from your best friend, so you start texting. From experience, it really does help when your friend is just a text away from bailing you out of a horrible date.
# 2 Goes to: Lip Gloss or Chap Stick Why? Even if you don’t have any makeup on or anything (maybe mascara), lip gloss or chap stick (mostly the shiny chap sticks) always perfects the look. You can’t go wrong with that. Both work wonders. We need something on our lips: we hate feeling our lips naked without something there to protect them and make them shine. Plus, not to mention ,chap sticks protect from sun rays and lip gloss, well, lip gloss is just pretty.
# 1 Goes to: Money!!!:This is THE simplest of all. Whether you go to the mall, the store, even the park. It’s good to know that you have a little cash on you. It doesn’t have to be much, but at least a few bucks is good. We all need money to get through life, not saying that you need to spend tons and tons of money, but it is good to know that you have something in your pocket. Especially most girls who are going to school: we need an “energy boost”, literally. You can go to a nearby ‘Starbucks’ or any cute little coffee shop and get a good coffee or anything to help cram for that test. As long as you can pay for it! This is something that is very important just to have and like you don’t need too, much just enough. Just in case.
Remember, this isn’t what all girls carry, but this is what most girls do. We are all different and unique, but when it comes to being girls, we are almost all the same.
