The Natural Disaster Game

Ya know what, ladies? We talk about what’s fair and what isn’t and we have our own share of unfairness in our lives, but an entire freaking country has been somewhat shafted in the wake of a disaster! I am talking about Pakistan. Apparently, they had a very, very bad flood, but it took Facebook for me to find out. I had to ask myself why.

Pakistan’s flood crisis just doesn’t seem to be getting as much coverage as Katrina, the tsunami, the Haiti earthquake and loads of other disasters that have recently happened. People have died…Heck, tons of people have died. Home were destroyed, families were ripped apart, but the media just doesn’t seem to give as much of a damn. Why? I’ve heard several theories, one being that the government just doesn’t deem it fit to be covered, because Pakistan spent money on weapons, but that’s the government’s fault! Their civilians are innocent people! Alas, they have what they have.

I don’t watch the news, I usually get all my news from either my yahoo, or google homepage, twitter, and an occasional look at the local newspaper. Even though my sources are somewhat limited I knew fairly quickly when the earthquake in Haiti happened, and even the earthquake in Chile. But I barely heard anything about the flood in Pakistan. I find it incredibly sad that this horrible disaster happened and yet there is next to no media coverage on it. Sadly I do think that Pakistan being in the Middle East is why. I hope and pray that things get better over there.

I’m sure that if some terrorist leader were killed there, it would’ve had tons of coverage. But it’s just a lot of people dying, so there’s no sympathy. It’s horrible…

is it just me or does it seem like especially this year there is an unusually large amount of natural disasters this year? (multiple earthquakes, floods, blizzards in the winter)
