The Double Standard

Ever since those first trailers started popping up, I was dying to see the new movie Easy A, and the movie rocked! The movie though, reminded me with glaring clarity, of the Double Standard that exists between guys and girls in many aspects of life. One being of doing more adult things, for example, if a guy sleeps with many girls, he is considered the “Big Man on Campus”; however if a girl is seen playing the field, the words used for us would be more along the lines of “slut”. Another area where the Double Standard is apparent, is in the workplace. If a man is a supervisor and he’s tough, people respect him and his authority and find it normal. However, if a woman shows the same kind of toughness, names appear like “Ice Queen”. There are many more places where this “Double Standard” takes place, which to me is both a fascinating and saddening concept to see.

Why do you think it exists? How did it come to be? Do you see it in your every day life? How can we help change it or eliminate it? Do you think it’s even possible?

I totally know what your saying, I don’t know why it is, or how we can change it… but its so obvious. You gave perfect examples. I really want to see Easy A! It looks funny, and I love Emma Stone.

Wow its hard to believe that us ladies are seen that way sometimes.. I honestly don’t know how we can change this bcuz of the generation that we live in.. I’m always one for staying on the positive side of things but if you think about it the vocabulary that’s been given to describe us girls is getting worse.. And Easy A is the funniest movie in the friggin world!!!!

First of all, I loved that movie. Saw it yesterday with my best friends!!! Hilarious! On to the answering of the questions!!!

When we first realized that we could think, talk, educate ourselves, women were viewed as household wives who did everything in the house. The man made the money, ran in politics, and everything basically a woman could not do. That is how males grew up to think, but with a few exceptions nowadays. However, we still are seen as the less superior sex when it comes to many other subjects in the world. Yes, not every day, but I witness it now and then. It angers me and I want to stand up, but the person takes it as a compliment (don’t know why). I don’t know how we can help in any way, but to talk with people that have been victimized to this (Not that easy when the person doesn’t care to know you). Maybe, but at my school, some girls are a bit blinded by the insults and take it in as if they were being complimented. Again, I have no idea why.

For some reason, the generation seems to be getting worse. Girls are losing the dignity, what makes them stand out from the crowd. They need to be educated to not go along with the mass population because that is a HUGE part of the reason to this problem.

I agree with Nakita333.

In my Social Sciences class we’ve been really getting deep into these sort of subjects, and it all comes down to how from the very beginnings of civilizations, societies have been structured as Patriarchies where the man is always the dominant gender. Which is basically why when a man does something like sleep with many girls he’s considered ‘Big Man on Campus’ and when it happens vice versa the girl is thought of a ’slut’. Even nowadays when, seeing as how women have gone far in gaining rights, etc. this society is still patriarch-oriented.

There were many ancient societies who were matriarch-oriented too. Where the women merely used the men for procreating and they were useless then.

Could there actually come to be a balance in all this? Hmm…tough question…

Interesting subject :)
