Study Extremes

Hi ladies, it’s going to be a short blog post from me this week because I’ve been busy studying for finals! Of course, this means that I’m blogging on a timely topic: studying and coping with the stress caused by the time crunch.  While most of my friends powered through final exams using the caffeine of multiple coffee drinks or energy drinks per day, I have become increasingly aware of the fact that a nontrivial portion of the student body at my university abuses drugs to keep them alert and focused.  On my way to class last week, in particular, I heard one student mention to another how he was stocked up on Adderall for the week.  If you haven’t heard of it before, Adderall is a powerful psychostimulant usually prescribed to treat ADD and ADHD, and its recreational abuse has been a problem throughout the past decade.  If you’re interested in learning more, NPR ran an article in 2009 about this “smart drug”: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=100254163

What are your feelings about students using drugs to help them get through studying for exams? What are some healthier ways that you can help yourself concentrate and cope with stressful periods?  I was able to make it through the week with rest, exercise, sleep, and vitamin C.  What’s your study regimen of choice?

I think using drugs to get through your studies is the dumbest thing I have heard. I am in my 2nd year of college and I haven’t even had to drink coffee to help me get through anything. Honestly, to me taking drugs and abusing drugs of any kind is just to me sooo ridiculous. Young teens these days think that they need to go through peer pressure and do what their friends are doings is the cool thing to do.

I usually help my stress and usually cope with by listening to music and drinking green tea. It always calms my nerves and helps with anything. I also think like you said Vitamins are good but I usually like D as in milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. because its so yummy.

@Susy I second that, it’s incredibly stupid. It’s also soo scary that kids are going to such extremes. On one hand it’s great that they care so much, but the other it’s alarming the amount of pressure these kids are putting on themselves, and the risks they are taking. How about a class in stress management!!!

I’m kinda bad but most of the times I repress my stress, but then it manifests its self as hives (Yikes) So don’t do that!

Somethings that I do that keep my stress level in check are, writing lists, listening to music, watching my fav shows or movies, breathing/meditation exercises.

@Alyssa – I definitely make lists, too! They tend to increase my stress temporarily, but help me accomplish my work in the long run.

Great ideas for coping with stress, ladies! Susy – yes, dairy is definitely comfort food.:)

I’m also a second year college student and unfortunately have friends who subject themselves to Adderall during midterms and finals.

It sounds almost too easy but I just try to remind myself that SLEEP is the number one gift I can give myself during finals. Yes I have sunk to the use of a few coffees or an energy drink here and there but the fact is a tired brain doesn’t absorb information as well as a rested one. And definitely leave studying for finals til’ the week before. I usually start reviewing all my notes and returned tests/quizzes about three weeks before school. From there you just need to pace yourself!

But for those times I do get overwhelmed I definitely agree with all the girls; listening to music, eating healthy foods and making check lists are great to decrease stress!!
