2010’s Life Changing Events

Hi Ladies!

Today I want to address some of the major events that happened in the past year– the earthquake in Haiti and the Gulf oil spill. It is always interesting to me that a major story runs in the newspaper for a few weeks, but after that, it disappears and doesn’t usually come up again. This also says something about the way we live. Because we are removed from the conflict, it is easy to forget about what these people are going through. Haiti is one of the poorest places in the world and after the quake, people are finding it even harder to feed their families. The oil spill is also a major issue. The oil is not only killing wildlife, it has caused hundreds of fisherman and people who work near the water to lose their jobs. There are many volunteers helping out in both Haiti and the Gulf but is this enough? What are your opinions? Do you have any experiences or ideas on these situations?

I would love to go and volunteer in Haiti. If I were at a point in my life where that was possible, then I totally would.

Good post Maia. I feel like sometimes when there is a major event, everyone freaks out, etc… and then the next week we are on to something else. It’s good to look back and remember what happened. I’m sure the people in Haiti won’t forget… ever.
