Marlee’s Film and Lit Class
So this year I am taking a Film and Literature English class and my teacher is from South Africa. He has showed us two films from his home country and I wanted to share them with you.
The first one is called Tsotsi. It one the academy award for best foreign film a few years ago and it follows a young gangster who lives in a slum in South Africa. He is a merciless killer at first but when Tsotsi finds a baby in the back of a car he has just stolen, he begins to put himself back together and move away from his dangerous life style.
The second movie we watched was Invictus which I am sure a lot of you have heard of. It is about Nelson Mandela’s presidency and how he brought the black and white South African’s together using a national Rugby team.
Both of these movies were interesting to me because they explore life in South Africa through the eyes of two people who are exact opposites. A confused and violent gang member, and a peaceful, confident man who has survived many years in jail. I like the movies have a common theme of acceptance and I recommend them both! (The soundtracks are also great!)
On a final note, I would love to know what South Africa is like now. Has anyone visited or lived there?
