Lauren’s Interesting Experience
Earlier this week, I was walking out of the dining hall back to my dorm room after brunch, and I heard a girl behind me chatting with her friend. She was complaining about how badly she needed a job. Another friend had previously suggested that she work at the dining hall. Her response was one of disgust rather than of thanks: “I’d rather be broke than wash dishes,” she said. She went on to describe how difficult her life was between instances of receiving her monthly allowance. She continued: “It’s not like I’m spending money on stuff I don’t need. I mean, I can’t go without eyeliner.”
I didn’t stay to eavesdrop any more, but I was a little shocked by her attitude. Her words provided me with some food for thought that I try to remember on a daily basis. She reminded me how important it is to be thankful for what you have, whether it’s good, honest yet unglamorous job or a friend who is just trying to help.
