Today is Anti-Bullying Day

Today, Febraury 23rd, marks the day to promote anti-bullying worldwide. This year especially, the media has been focusing on the issue of bullying that seems to be a problem for many. Bullying has caused multiple deaths, suicides, depression, disorders, families relocating, and kids changing schools.

Many solutions have been created to combat bullying, however this one in particular caught my eye. “Pink means Stop on Anti-Bullying. A group of teenagers started the movement to wear pink to represent your stance on bullying and making a decisive and conscious decision to stop bullying. The movement was inspired by one of their friends who was bullied for wearing pink and being homosexual.

“Bullying is a major problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and over the Internet … on February 23, 2011 we encourage all of you to wear something pink to symbolize that we as a society will not tolerate bullying anywhere,” reads the Pink Shirt Day website.

Bullying behavior can have negative consequences for both the bully and the victim.”Studies have shown that boys identified as bullies in middle school were four times as likely as their peers to have more than one criminal conviction by age twenty-four,” reads the safety site.

Whether or not you decide to raise awareness amongst your friends and peers and encourage your school to participate in wearing pink, the important thing is to be aware of bullying and to decide to take action. For example, in the cafeteria, a girl could be sitting alone at a table while being taunted by a group of boys at a nearby table. Take action by joining the girl, sticking up for her, and letting her know that she is not alone. Or take action by joining a movement, working with your school or workplace to create preventive measures and a group environment to join together in eradicating bullying.

Aww I’m reading this as my day is ending, but I did wear a pink scarf today( total coincidence though).

This is such an important issue, bullying can create deep-seeded scars, and everything possible needs to be done to prevent that.
