Usually the names are never that funny or embarrassing at first, its only after many years that the natives speak it in different ways and the most common one becomes the name. So if in a town that has a name you don’t want to say, say the one that resembles it, regardless of it being right or wrong.
I live in Karachi, Pakistan. It used to be Kolachi but later was changed to Karachi. Don’t know if the government of the time gave any reason for it or not but Karachi has a port and Kolachi resembles a lot with two urdu words ‘ko’ and ‘lanch’ which mean ‘to’ and ‘yacht/boat’.
So was Kolachi ever Kolanchi or some other name? don’t know but sure enough it does causes confusion or may be it did and thus was changed to Karachi.
