Dolphins’ Blubber Holds Secrets to Healing!
Discovery News recently reported a study which showed some pretty cool discoveries about the impressive healing capabilities of dolphins. Michael Zasloff of Georgetown University concluded in a scientific study that dolphins have a different healing response to injuries compared to humans. The example of a shark bite was used in the study. Within minutes after a dolphin is bit by a shark, a white film from the blubber expands over the wound to cover the area. Within 24 hours new skin tissue is already forming. Another cool thing was that dolphins’ blood moves more quickly throughout their body than human blood, yet when they are bit by a shark they don’t hemorrhage. Zasloff thinks these impressive healing abilities could be from Isovaleric acid and organohalogens found in their blubber which has the properties needed to prevent infection.
