New Mexico!!
This week marks my third week in college!! For my class, southwest studies, we took a five day field trip throughout Colorado and New Mexico. It was by far the best field trip of my life. We took a coach bus to Taos, New Mexico, stopping in Ludlow, CO to see the Ludlow massacre site. Ludlow was pretty disappointing regarding the history of the site, it was very poorly preserved, and the people working there didn’t even know what Ludlow was. The site was vast, rolling fields with mountains far off, a still operating rail for coal transport, and a ton of prairie dogs (which did you know they carry the bubonic plague so that way when their population gets to big, it gets shrunken down again?!)
After ludlow we ate at a really nice restaurant in the town of Trinidad which was kind of like a coal mining ghost town. Then we drove to Taos and stayed at the nicest best western! The rooms were adobe and there was a fire pit in the middle of the hotel site where pueblo indians came to perform native dances. We had a lot of free time later, so we walked into town which is gorgeous.
The next day we visited the Pueblo village which was super cool, it was nice being there a second time because you notice things you didnt see before – I also went on a little shopping spree
got myself a handmade bangle, earrings, necklace, and my mom her birthday presents!! The Pueblo village was breathtaking, with its culture and architecture. The pride the people there have in their nativity and their history is inspiring and so respectable.
The next day we got a tour of a local acequia with this really funny and cool guy named miguel who is the maerdoma of that entire area. then we stopped at the rio grande gorge WHICH WAS INSANE.
From Taos we went to Crestone but stopped in San Luis colorado and hiked up a huge hill to this new chapel the people built for when the pope came to visit. THEN WE WENT TO THE SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK!!! the sand dunes – words cant describe – hardest workout of my life, we tried running 2 miles to the peak of the dunes but its incredibly hard because of the sand and there are frequent sand storms which are so painful and pelt your skin and i still have some sand in my ears. then we all were running down the sand dunes which is so fun and screaming doing indian calls (led be moi) and i wiped out once, doing flips in the air because i was going to fast and lost control of my legs.
then from the sand dunes we went to the baca campus which was equally gorgeous. i had an epiphany while writing the next morning sitting on a little log strewn across a tiny river/creek/stream so epiphanies are always nice.
This is probably one of the best experiences of my life, college. I love my school so much, I can’t imagine going anywhere else.
What are your cool adventures? How’s school? Blog away girls!!
