Controversy: Keystone XL Oil Pipeline
Being away at college, with an incredibly hectic schedule, I find myself being out of touch with current events and world news. Today, I decided to start the catch-up process by reading the New York Times and found a disconcerting article on the front page of the website. I’m sure some of you are aware of the $7 billion oil pipeline prospect to reach from Alberta, Canada to refineries in Oklahoma and the Gulf Coast. This proposed project by a Canadian pipeline company, Trans Canada, poses as a serious environmental threat. However, the project is being considered by the White House because of strong demands to increase energy and pressure to end dependence on the Middle East for energy.
But, of course, the White House has decided to put off making an official decision until after the November 2012 elections. What I wish more politicians and decision makers would be receptive to, is that without a functioning and fluorishing environment, there can’t be a fuctioning and fluorishing economy. Destroying and degrading the environment to extract non-renewable sources is irreversiably detrimental. As many have said before, we need to start investing time, money, and effort into renewable, clean energy.
What are your thoughts? What do you think a solution could be in a desperate time for energy when classic energy sources are dwindling exponentially.
